British Museum's Atlantic Trade & Identity season, and major
exhibition. as part of this season, La Bouche du Roi. 

The Atlantic Trade & Identity season features a series of
exhibitions, displays and events exploring transatlantic trade and
its relationship to slavery, resistance and diasporas. 

Below is more detailed information on three particular aspects of the
Atlantic Trade & Identity season.

La Bouche du Roi: an artwork by Romuald Hazoumé

La Bouche du Roi is the main exhibition in the Atlantic Trade and
Identity season. Primarily a warning against all kinds of human
greed, exploitation and enslavement, both historical and
contemporary, it is a profound and though-provoking artistic
statement by Beninese artist Romuald Hazoumé. This contemporary
installation is made from a combination of materials, including
petrol cans, spices and audio and visual elements.

After the Slave Trade: Black history and contemporary Britain

Paul Gilroy, author of Black Atlantic, leads a discussion with Lola
Young, Gus John and Jean Stubbs about black history and culture and
contemporary issues about identity.

The economic impact of the 1807 British Abolition of the Atlantic
Slave Trade

Thursday 17 May, 18.30-20.30

Eminent historian Joseph Inikori will investigate the pre-Abolition
debate on the expected economic impact, both in England and in
Africa, and will show how the arguments of the time stood up to
historical reality.
