_*SUPPORT FOR ASYLUM SEEKERS*_

What are practical things Ashram could do to help destitute asylum seekers ?

Some suggestions from the Ashram weekend in Castleton – May 2006


*HOUSING*

Offer a room in a family home.

Develop residential space in Ashram properties.

Open more squats.

Get involved in workdays to improve squats.


*SUPPORT*

* *Befriending

Guiding (local services, free meals etc.)

Offer a meal at home (occasional or once a week / month)

Health support

Legal support

Translation services

Teach English

Life skills training (incl. budgeting skills)

Conversation Groups


  PROMOTION

* *Story telling evening – like “Aware” in Nottingham

Give talks to church groups etc.

Make connections with local mosques, temples, and gurudwaras


*WORK*

Offer casual work (e.g. helping an old person in their home)

Mutual Aid – offer food, lodgings, and/or expenses in return for
volunteer work on Ashram projects

Time Bank or LETS schemes
