FYI: This is another organization to which we belong, and we are working with Chris Norman at Crown Point to develop some Farm-to-School programs here in Akron.

Day of Action Pushes to
Get Real Food into Schools
Labor Day was a milestone for our movement. With kids heading back to
school and Congress resuming session, more than 20,000 Americans
rallied at over 300 events across the country to tell our nation's
leaders it's time to fix school lunch.
In all 50 states, kids, parents,
teachers, farmers, leaders from community groups and especially Slow
Food members sat down to make a political statement by sharing in the
joy of good food. This day marked the first show of force in our
campaign to give kids real food
at school, and now we're in a position to make our message loud and
clear when Congress begins debating the Child Nutrition Act this fall.
Thank you to everyone who came, who brought food, signed the petition, wrote letters --
this was your day.
Heirloom Apple Scavenger Hunt - Win a DVD
Win a DVD of the upcoming film “The Botany of Desire!” Apple season is here, orchards are producing their first fruits, and the Renewing America’s Food Traditions Alliance continues its work identifying rare apple varieties, coordinating
regional "forgotten fruit" workshops and compiling resources on apple
diversity.
What can you do? A lot! At the community level, you can find where old
orchards still exist, take cuttings from them, learn how to graft those
onto rootstock (or find someone who knows how to help), organize apple
tastings and celebrate your own local apple culture. Today, we invite
you to create your own Heirloom Apple Scavenger Hunt at local farms and orchards, or even at your local farmers market.
Take
photos of as many heirloom/heritage/old-timey varieties as you can,
including the farm or farmer where you located it. Your own backyard
counts! Send us your list of apples, your photos, and a recipe for something you made with one or more kind of apple.
The deadline is Oct. 15. Email your submissions to raftalliance at slowfoodusa.org.
We will enter your name in a drawing—Ten winners will receive a DVD of
the upcoming film “The Botany of Desire." Winners will be announced on Oct. 28.
Sonoma State Hosts "Good Eats & Music" Oct. 11
Mark your calendar for Sunday, October 11, for the "Good Eats & Music" in
Sonoma County. The campus chapter at Sonoma State University is
hosting an afternoon featuring live music, a locally sourced lunch, and
guest speakers. The afternoon will start off with an artisan cheese
mixer, followed by lunch. The menu includes sustainably-raised chicken
from Soul Food Farms, a pasture poultry producer in Vacaville, Calif., which
is rebuilding their farm after a major fire. Learn more on the SFUSA blog.
Speakers at the event include Josh Viertel, president of Slow Food USA;
Dr. Ruben Armiñana, president of Sonoma State University, and Mark
Arax, noted author of “West of the West: Dreamers, Believers, Builders,
and Killers in the Golden State”. Relax on campus and enjoy the
musical entertainment of three local bands. Join us for this special
afternoon by purchasing your ticket today. Slow Food Sonoma State University is one of more than 20 campus
chapters that focuses on promoting local food on
campus and in the community. Find out more by visiting www.slowfoodssu.blogspot.com.
