Dear Larry,

In taking the time to reflect during these cold winter days we have been able to realize how blessed we have been over this past year. Through your continued confidence and support we have remained able to practice our passion: turning your vision into beautiful outdoor experiences that nurture the mind, body, and soul.

Thank you for a great 2009 - we always appreciate hearing from you! We are especially grateful for your referrals and for your stories sharing the joys of the gardens we've created with you. It is a delight to be a part of a community of like-minded individuals. Let's continue to expand our friendships and our nurturing of the earth.

To a lovely winter, a blossoming spring, and a beautiful year,

Samuel & Sabrena

 If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant:
if we did not sometimes taste of adversity,
prosperity would not be so welcome.

Winter Learning

Winter brings us opportunity to concentrate on designs, but also to educate ourselves and others. This year we will be very busy! Here are some programs we are excited about in the upcoming weeks.
	* Samuel and Sabrena will be lecturing to the Ohio chapter of APLD on Monday. The topic is "Sustainable Landscapes Today - and What the Future Holds". As you probably know, the Association of Professional Landscape Designers (APLD) is the international organization Samuel has been so active with over the past 9 years, most recently as Past President. We hope to help fellow designers embrace more sustainable design practices in their own work.
	* Several of us are heading to conferences: CENTS in Columbus and New England Grows in Boston.
	* Permaculture Design! Samuel and Sabrena are both enrolled in the NE Ohio permaculture course mentioned above, and look forward to being "Certified" in Permaculture Design.

Salsbury-Schweyer is Growing & Hiring

Recent architecture graduate, Joey Knott, has joined our team doing CAD drafting/designing. He shares our passion for sustainable design; in fact, Joey was a fellow volunteer on the design team for the Habitat for Humanity LEED home we are working on. You may have noticed the absence of Elise George, who moved to SE Ohio in November. We miss her and wish her and Todd all the best.

We still need a few key employees. Do you know of bright, talented individuals who share our passion for nature, people and planet? We need an administrative/marketing assistant to replace Elise. We also are now hiring horticulturalists/artists/craftsmen to work with our installation/garden crew. Email or call us for details.

Forcing Branches : A Taste of Springtime

One way to bring warmth to your home during these winter months is to get ahead of the flowering season. By cutting shrub and tree branches and placing them in a vase filled with water, you can easily create beautiful arrangements to offset the effects of the cold outdoors. Simply cut branches which are one to two feet in length and place in a decorative vase filled with water. Buds will open in two to four weeks depending on species. Below is a list of varieties that force well.

	* Forsythia
	* Flowering Plum
	* Flowering Peach
	* Flowering Cherry
	* Flowering Pear
	* Pussy Willow
	* Lilac
	* Apple, Crabapple
	* Bridal Wreath Spirea
	* Red-Twig Dogwood
	* Flowering Quince
2010 Garden Trends

With the recent changes in America over the past year and current economic climate, people have begun to take a look at what is really important in life. The Garden Media Group took this into account as they released a list of trends of what's "in" and what's "out" for the year 2010.

1. Main Street is In. Wall Street is Out.
2. Edible gardens are In. Lawns are Out.
3. Slow Gardening is In. Instant gratification is Out.
4. Mindful is In. Bling is Out.
5. Eco-Boosting is In. Chemical Dependent Gardens are Out.
6. Multi-tasking is In. Single-Purpose gardening is Out
7. Perennials and Shrubs are In. Divas are Out.
Our sentiments exactly! However, are these really "trends", or are these actually the "way of the future"? We feel that our American landscapes are changing - for the better! Yes, let us consider what really is important in life. Reducing our work and taking time to really connect with nature is high on our list. Give us a call to see how we can help you "keep up with the trends", but more importantly, simplify & beautify your life.

Q & A:
What is Permaculture?

The term "permaculture" is most widely accredited to Austrailians Bill Mollison and his associate David Holmgren. The words, derived from the terms "permanent agriculture" and "permanent culture", are in reference to the practice of holistic landscape design methods focusing less on the objects of the designs themselves, and more on the relationships between them. The goal is to achieve more sustainable, "ecologically sound, economically prosperous human communities." To do this, elements are chosen which perform more than one function. Toby Hemingway decribes this in his book, "Gaia's Garden":
 "Interconnections are what turns a collection of unrelated parts into a functioning system, whether it's a community, a family, or an ecosystem."
Often gardens designed with permaculture in mind incorporate edible elements alongside floral and perennial elements which complement each other by feeding off one another's attributes to maximize use of by-product while minimizing demand for human labor.
