Hi,

sorry for the cross-posting, but i _love_ this kind of gossip ;-)

If any one else is subscribed to any help-email-list of any free
software project, it would be great to say here, so we can 'use'
eachother... some of these lists are quite busy. so now you know i'm on
the OpenOffice list (in various, actually)

You can copy and paste from QuarkXPress into a Writer document, but it
won't paste any of the graphics, just the text. And Writer cannot open a
.qxd file at all. In fact, nothing can open a qxd file from version 5 or later.
Quark, Inc. deliberately coded their format to make it impossible starting
with version 5.

Quark, Inc. did that because when Adobe started selling InDesign they
made a QuarkXPress import filter for it in order to steal customers away
from Quark. InDesign can still open QuarkXPress 4 files, but not the later
versions.

I gave up on Quark, Inc. a long time ago. I use InDesign now exclusively. If
you need support for languages other than English, it doesn't cost any
more. I believe there is a lowered price for QuarkXPress users. InDesign is
far ahead of QuarkXPress in features.

I do all my writing in Writer, and then copy and paste into InDesign, which
works perfectly. InDesign doesn't have a .sxw import filter, but the copy
and paste works just as well. Or you could save from Writer as .rtf or .doc
format, for which InDesign does have import filters.

Adobe has a free trial version of InDesign on their website. I recommend
you give it a try.
