and then simply set SMTP in thunderbird to:

localhost

port: XXYY

where XXYY is 2525 in the example above - and the tunnel is dug

i do (assuming that local and remote user is the same):

ssh -C -L XXYY:springnight.burngreave.net:25 springnight.burngreave.net

so the order seems to make no difference? - (the -C compresses, in case
you have bandwidth issues)
