Ten Days of Attacks against Left-wing Websites

The sites of Diagonal, Kaosenlared, Arainfo, La Directa, Ràdio Klara,  
Periodismo Humano e Infolibre, amongst others, are being affected by a  
series of cyber attacks.


Since October 12th, the websites of different left-wing media and  
social organisations have suffered cybernetic attacks preventing them  
from being publicly viewable. The attacks started at 00.00 hrs of the  
‘Spanish national day’ and have been claimed by extreme right-wing  
groups.

Attacks have continued during the following days, registering a series  
of attacks DDoS, (Distributed Denial-of-Service attack (DDoS attack).  
A DDoS basically means that many computers communicate simultaneously  
with an IT system – for example, they visit a website or network and  
request data – until this system saturates and stops being accessible.  
In order to reach the computing capacity needed to flood the servers  
with enough requests, they use botnets: computer networks that are  
controlled remotely. At times these computers are “zombies”. They have  
been infected by a virus and their owners do not even know that they  
are contributing to generate this data traffic. There are botnet  
services for rent and the DDoS take place continuously in thousands of  
webs. To a large extent, these are attacks are normally carried out by  
large companies blackmailing others with stopping the flooding in  
exchange for money.

The 13th of October, the contra-information organisation Kaosenlared  
received a mail in which a fascist group claimed authority for an  
attack that was directed specifically to its website. These attacks  
have continued intermittently for 9 days until the 21st of October,  
and have also focused on the websites of DIAGONAL and Nodo50.  
Throughout the duration of these attacks, numerous websites of social  
and political organisations that share servers have been affected.  
Nodo50’s server, a net service provider orientated to social  
movements, has detected over 32.000 computers participating in the  
attacks. Some of these were coming from botnets in China, whose rental  
can reach 1.000€ per hour, and others from European networks.

A generalised attack to left-wing media

On Wednesday 16th, the digital journal InfoLibre, created by the  
exdirector of Público newspaper, Jesús Maraña, also stopped being  
available due to a DDoS, which was repeated on Thursday 17th and  
Sunday 20th. With it, other local newspapers, not necessarily of a  
leftist orientation, such as El Heraldo de Aragón, suffered the same  
fate, as they were hosted by the same server. On October 21st, the  
target was Periodismo Humano. The botnets have continued at the same  
time to target sporadically servers administered by Nodo50.  
Kaosenlared became inoperative again during several times on Monday  
21st, together with DIAGONAL and the community radio Ràdio Klara from  
Valencia. The website Publico.es was also unavailable during the 21st,  
but the management of this newspaper did not want to make a public  
statement about this.

Last Friday, InfoLibre informed that it was suffering these actions  
and that they had received an email from a “well-known ultra  
right-wing organisation” that aimed at stopping news publication from  
this site. Similar messages have been sent through Twitter to Nodo50,  
in which a user, who later erased her/his profile, showed personal  
photographs and explicit information about the servers so their  
authority over the attacks was recognised. For instance, the message  
to Periodismo Humano and DIAGONAL was as follows: “Terrorist and  
Marxist scumbags, it is the duty of Spanish soliders to attack your  
webpages”. Similar statements have been received by email by the  
editorial of this newspaper (Diagonal). Jesús Maraña’s journal has  
already taken this attack to court. The rest of media and organisation  
are studying possible coordinate legal actions.

The Spanish Federation of Journalists Associations of Spain  
(Federación de Asociaciones de Periodistas de España - FAPE) and  
Madrid’s Press Association (Asociación de la Prensa de Madrid - APM)  
produced a public statement on the 21st condemning the attacks to  
“several digital media” in which they demanded the Government to take  
action. This was after nine days of attacks, and only InfoLibre was  
mentioned.

Las webs de Diagonal, Kaosenlared, Arainfo, La Directa, Ràdio Klara,  
Periodismo Humano e Infolibre, entre otras, están siendo afectadas por  
una serie de ataques informáticos

Desde el pasado día 12 de octubre, las páginas web de diversos medios  
de comunicación y colectivos sociales de izquierdas han sufrido  
ataques cibernéticos que han supuesto que haya sido imposible  
visitarlas intermitentemente. La hostilidad comenzó a las 00:00 horas  
del día de la "Fiesta Nacional de España" y ha sido reivindicada por  
grupos de extrema derecha.

En los siguientes días, se ha continuado registrando una serie de ataques DDoS
Un DDoS consiste básicamente en que muchos ordenadores se comuniquen  
con un sistema informático de manera simultánea –por ejemplo, que  
visiten una página web o una red y soliciten determinados datos– hasta  
conseguir que éste se sature y deje de estar accesible. Para alcanzar  
la capacidad de computación necesaria para inundar los servidores con  
suficientes peticiones, se utilizan botnets: redes de ordenadores que  
se controlan de forma remota. En ocasiones estos ordenadores son  
"zombies", han sido infectados por un virus informático y sus  
propietarios ni siquiera saben que están contribuyendo a generar este  
tráfico de datos. Existen servicios de alquiler de botnets y los DDoS  
suceden continuamente en miles de webs, en gran parte obra de empresas  
que chantajean a otras pidiendo dinero a cambio de cesar la inundación  
de peticiones.


El 13 de octubre, el colectivo de contrainformación Kaosenlared  
recibía un mail en el que un grupo fascista se atribuía la autoría de  
un ataque que estaba siendo dirigido específicamente a su web. Estos  
ataques se han prolongado por ahora durante 9 días, hasta ayer 21 de  
octubre, de manera intermitente y centrados en otras ocasiones a las  
webs de DIAGONAL o de Nodo50. Por el camino se han visto afectadas  
numerosas páginas de colectivos sociales y políticos que comparten  
servidores. El equipo de Nodo50, un proveedor de servicios de internet  
orientado a movimientos sociales, ha detectado que más de 32.000  
ordenadores han participado en los ataques; algunos provienen de  
botnets situados en China cuyo alquiler puede llegar a los mil euros  
la hora y otros de redes europeas.


Un ataque generalizado a medios de izquierdas

El miércoles 16 el diario digital InfoLibre, creado por el exdirector  
of Público newspaper, Jesús Maraña, también dejaba de estar disponible  
por un DDoS, que se repetía el jueves 17 y el domingo 20. Con ella  
caían las de otros periódicos locales no necesariamente considerados  
de izquierdas alojados en el mismo servidor, tales como El Heraldo de  
Aragón. El lunes 21 de octubre, el objetivo viró a Periodismo Humano.  
Paralelamente, las botnets han continuado apuntando en ocasiones a los  
servidores administradas por Nodo50. Kaosenlared volvía a estar  
inoperativo en varios instantes de la tarde del lunes, junto con  
DIAGONAL y la radio comunitaria valenciana Ràdio Klara. A Publico.es  
tampoco se pudo acceder durante varias horas en la tarde del día 21,  
pero la dirección de este periódico no ha querido hacer ninguna  
comunicación pública al respecto.


El pasado viernes, InfoLibre comunicaba que estaba sufriendo estas  
acciones y que había recibido un email de "una conocida organización  
de ultraderecha" que aseguraba estar interesada en que se dejara de  
publicar noticias. El tono es parecido al de los mensajes enviados por  
Twitter a Nodo50, en los que un usuario que posteriormente borró su  
perfil mostraba fotos personales e información explícita sobre los  
servidores para que se reconociera su autoría. O al dirigido a  
Periodismo Humano y DIAGONAL: “Escoria terrorista y marxista, es deber  
de los soldados españoles atacar vuestras páginas”. Reivindicaciones  
similares han sido recibidas por correo electrónico por la redacción  
de este periódico. El diario de Jesús Maraña ya ha presentado una  
denuncia. El resto de medios están estudiando posibles acciones  
legales coordinadas.
