dear transmissioners

first a big thanks to all of you who
made the meeting happen and prepared both the social and analytic ground for the
great work! with petri we are writing a report for our collaborators in helsinki
to be presented in a discussion of collaborative media practices with adam hyde
and bifo berardi on 27/10.

we will also circulate the excellent metadata
proposal in our group for comments. at m-cult we have been immersed for some
time in the ...onerous, stringent... world of semantic web and listened
carefully to the (partly academic) discussions of its possible merits visavis
soft ontologies (self-organising maps) and folksonomic camps. we think that
there are ways to combine the best of these approaches in creating flexible
description schemas for audiovisual content, in the real world...

more
about these on the metadata list & group which i hope to join.

txxx
once more!

minna

Transmissioners and friends

On Sunday 15th October 2006 at Re:Tx in
Limehouse Town Hall, London,
Jamie King proposed a RDF metadata standard
for the Transmission network of
online social justice video projects
Consultation on this document is invited before Friday 27th October
2006.

*-* Metadata Standardisation Proposal *-*

The
well-formed proposal was welcomed as the first practical step towards
the
basic 'glue' we need to work together effectively.

The underlying goal
is for participants in the RDF standard to create
*clean* rss/atom
feeds
which can then be aggregated and re-distributed as issue, region or
other
specific feeds,
thus enabling users of online video easily to
access and exchange material
in a targetted manner.
but - it will only
work for all of our benefit, if we are all willing to
adopt it and make it
our own

Jamie and Jan Gerber (Rome Tx participant and co-author of the
report) have
stressed that the standard should be
a.. as easy as
possible to understand and implement for video producers
and
distributors,
a.. applicable to as many different kinds of content
as possible without
being unwieldy, and
a.. workable in the real
world.

their initial working draft proposal can be found here:
http://shiftspace.cc/jamie/tx_report_0.1.html

*-*
Consultation *-*

We are now inviting thorough consultation on this
document across the tx
network.
Please pass this link or file to
colleagues, especially technical people and
those who create and manage the
upload forms for any online video CMS. Even
the most basic questions,
practical suggestions, technical adjustments etc
all welcome.
(We
specifically draw your attention to the importance of language
and
translation issues
and the possible framing of an 'appropriate use'
code for inclusion in the
description field.)
please send responses: to
the metadata list metadata@transmission.cc
(see
below to subscribe).

We have set an end date for initial
consultation: 27th October 2006

*-* Future Development
*-*

Once we have broad agreement within the existing Tx network on the
proposed
metadata standard,
Participatory Culture and others will be
actively encouraged to adopt and
develop tools to work with
it.
Thereafter the potential of this work will be as great as our
commitment to
using it and extending its use.

*-* Co-Ordination
*-*

There is a Metadata Working Group to take this project forward, it
currently
includes the authors of the proposal and about 5 others who
expressed an
interest in joining at at the re:tx meeting. more members
welcome,
the mailing list for this group is at
http://lists.transmission.cc/mailman/listinfo/metadata,
please
introduce your interest to the list if you would like to join.

Zoe
Young is the co-ordinator of this working group,
my contact is zoe@esemplastic.net, tel: +44 207 723
2875, skype: zoeyou
This means that I chase people to make sure promised
tasks get done,
and carry out liaison with other working groups, which
include 'do no harm',
'subtitling', 'preparation for aggregation'
What
being co-ordinator does *not* mean is that
1. I am in charge of the process
and deciding what gets done when
nor does it mean that
2. I know exactly
what needs to be done!
so we need help from other members of the rdf
working group - and the wider
network -
to review our efforts to date
and plan the future work process.

Many thanks for your attention, we
look forward to hearing your views on
this exciting proposal within the
next ten days.

Zoe Young
