[Anarchafeminists] Fw: Fw: women in christianity///

I forwarded this to a friend who knows about these things, and she sent me the following reply. She and I are both involved with the Feminist Library in London, and we reckon it might be worth your while coming and browsing our stock - check out our website www.feministlibrary.co.uk. There is also Feminist Archive North in Leeds and Feminist Archive South in Bristol who might be able to help, though they have less books than us.

Cheers, Gail

      Hi,

I'm sure there's lots of material out there - the first thing that springs to mind are the more radical feminists who rejected Christianity based on the patriarchal structure and consequently contributed towards alternative spirituality.

Mary Daly 'Gyn/Ecology' is a major work and I think she mentions female genital mutilation in that.
Carol P. Christ tends to focus on Goddess spirituality, and there are many interpretations who use Mary as a divine figure.
(In the Feminist Library there is a book in room 101 called 'The Virgin' on the shelf I have classified on this.)

Biblically, there are many female characters and analysis on the interpretation of certain books.
I recommend Esther and Ruth in particular as starting points - lots of theological work available, and if you're looking for a feminist perspective:

'Ruth and Esther (Feminist Companion to the Bible)' by Athalya Brenner - part of a series on feminist interpretations of different parts of the Bible

'Feminist Interpretation: the Bible in Women's Perspective by Luise Schottroff

'From Deborah to Esther: Sexual Politics in the Hebrew Bible' by Lilliam R. Klein

'Marxist Feminist Criticism of the Bible' by Roland Boer and Jorunn Okland

      Best wishes,

      Lauren

I thought you might be able to help with this query? Also, I'm sure there's some stuff in the FL that could be helpful, but is she in London?
