The Luddites were Yorkshire textile workers, who in 1811-13 smashed
machines which were destroying their livelihoods, in a time of
economic austerity. But they were not the mindless vandals and
opponents of progress that scientists have portrayed them as - they
broke only machines they thought 'hurtful to commonality’ i.e. to the
common good. The Luddites200 group is celebrating this anniversary to
honour their memory. We want to start a debate about the continuing
use of technology to destroy jobs, e.g. in the public sector cuts. We
want an open debate on issues like GM food, nuclear power,
surveillance and plans to manipulate the Earth's climate, a debate
that is not distorted by the branding of those with concerns as
'Luddites'.

Proceeds of the benefit gig will be used to organise a cultural/ideas
festival in April 2012, a gathering of technology politics activists
in July 2012 and to produce publications and videos.
