GENOA 2001, IT’S NOT OVER...
Solidarity benefit tour Genoa01 anti G8 protest
July 2001, Genoa, Italy: as the powerful of the world hold their
annual summit (so called G8) and peaceful protesters get ready to
celebrate their counter-summit, thousands of rebels take to the streets
of the city. They don’t care about the ‘red zone’, the theatre of the
organized protest, as they know that dominination is everywhere and
indeed they go everywhere, especially where they are not expected to
go. They clash many times with the police, but on many other
occasions they know how to avoid the cops. They use paving stones
as weapons against the forces of order, and street furnishings as an
instrument of self-defence from the charges. And as always happens
when the resistance erupts, euphoria spreads and common sense flees.
Soon the impossible becomes possible: the Marassi prison, one of the
most hated targets, is stormed; goods are expropriated and distributed
around; banks, supermarkets, companies, barracks and surveillance
devices are attacked, smashed and destroyed. But above all, what is
shattered and turned upside down is the peace of the rich, the
murderous serenity of a world made of images, commodities and
police. In the most militarized city of the world, in the very days
decided by the institutional agenda, the plans of the enemy and those
of the leaders of media-directed dissent are completely derailed while
the joy of ‘creative destruction’ takes over.

By contrast, the murder of a comrade, 22-year-old Carlo Giuliani,
shot dead by a carabiniere on the second day of the summit, and the
brutal response of repression with the horrific massacre perpetrated by
anti-riot
cops in the Diaz school (where most protesters have
gathered) and the torture inflicted on the many demonstrators arrested
in the police barracks of Bolzaneto will for ever mark these days of
enthusiasm and generalized revolt.

July 2012: eleven years after the revolt of Genoa and following
lengthy judicial proceedings (which also concluded with the acquittal
of both the cop who executed Carlo and the many pigs in uniform
who massacred hundreds of protesters), the Italian justice takes its
revenge on 10 comrades. They have been singled out among the thousands of
rebels of
Genoa 2001, and are now being used as
scapegoat in order to give a warning to everyone. ‘Devastation and
plunder’ is the new charge devised for the occasion, a charge that
implies from 8 to 15 years of imprisonment.

Of the 10 comrades convicted of ‘devastation and plunder’ by the
Court of Cassation on July 13 2012, five will go on retrial owing to
some procedural fault. Of the other five: one is on the run (after being
sentenced to 13 years... our strong desire is that he escapes prison
forever), one is being detained under house arrest (after being
sentenced to 3 years and 6 months) and two are serving lengthy prison
sentences.
They are Marina Cugnaschi, sentenced to 12 years and 10 months, and
Alberto Funaro,
sentenced to 10 years. The fifth
comrade, Francesco Puglisi, was recently arrested in Spain after
almost one year on the run (he has to serve 15 years).
This solidarity benefit tour shows with C.u.b.a. Cabbal and Leleprox
is for them. Let’s show them that they are not alone, that revolt and
solidarity won’t be stopped by law courts or riot cops.

SOLIDARITY WITH MARINA, ALBERTO, FRANCESCO, INES AND ALL THE REBELS LOCKED
UP (OR ON
THE RUN) ALL OVER THE WORLD.
