New Grassroots Fund For Social Justice Launches


On Saturday 16th March in London, representatives from 15 projects 
applying for money from the 'Edge Fund' met with the funding body 
membership in a ground breaking new model for giving out money.

The process of the first round of funding came to an end on Saturday 
with applicants invited to the final decision making day to be 
involved in the decision making process. The idea was to be as open 
and transparent as possible, and to break down the power structures 
that usually exist between funders and applicants so that people are 
making decisions on an equal level.

Some of the groups to receive funding included Disabled People 
Against The Cuts, UK Uncut, Million Women Rise, Foil Vedanta, 
Fitwatch, Fuel Poverty Action; and 8 April Movement. Most groups took 
home around £2000 each. A total of £40,000 was distributed amongst 28 
groups, having narrowed it down from 334 applications.

The Edge Fund was set up nearly a year ago by a group of donors, 
activists and members of communities facing oppression and injustice. 
The Edge Fund is different because it explores ways in which funds can 
be distributed in a way that both devolves the power of donors and 
creates real and systemic social change.

The second round of funding has just opened with a deadline of 22nd 
April. The Edge Fund is calling for donations from small and large 
donors via their website.

Edge Fund Community Outreach Worker, Dan Glass said:

“It is an elite few that have control over our world who attempt to 
divide us and set us against each other whilst hoping we don’t notice 
them orchestrating everything to benefit themselves. To create an 
equal society we need to bring an end to this massive imbalance of 
power. So far there has been very little funding available for this 
work.”
