*Update: this year's Radical Herbalism Gathering in June*


Dear folks,

We are planning this year's gathering with much excitement and positivity.
This newsletter has lots of bits of news relating to the gathering,
including programme & practical info, and also about how you can connect
with us in different ways and participate in our collective radical
herbalism.


*New dates*

The 2014 gathering will take place over the weekend of *Saturday 7**th** &
Sunday 8**th** of June at Crabapple Housing Co-op near Shrewsbury. *You can

*Response to 2013 gathering*

We'd like to invite your *feedback* on last year's event, in particular
around things like accessibility and any practical issues you might have
faced in coming to the festival. It will be great to hear from you about
how we can improve the gathering in this respect. Please send your feedback

*New website & bookings*

We have a new website at

we invite you to come have a look if you haven't already. Info about
this year's gathering will be posted up there as it comes together, and you
can *book your tickets now* through the booking form on the site. We are
offering a sliding scale like last year, with the ticket price range from
£40 to £80.

We are offering 10 bursary places to people who are unemployed/unwaged or
low waged i.e. people who would not otherwise be able to come to the
gathering. (We can consider support with travel costs as well). There is
information on the website about the bursaries and how to apply.


*Networks*

We are setting up a radical herbalism *Google Group* from the email lists
gathered at the end of last year's gathering, if you'd like to be part of
it, or otherwise, let us know. The group will be a communication tool
between us all to share knowledge and ideas about each other's projects and
keep the momentum and contact going, this desire was expressed at the
closing plenary last year.

We are planning to put together a *zine* for the 2014 gathering, and we
seek contributions for it! Send us your writing, artwork or other creations
connected with radical herbalism.

Another element of the gathering this year will be to build up a *solidarity
medicine chest*, available for campaigns and protest camps. We're looking
for donations of medicines towards this so anything that you can give is
appreciated.

If you've been looking at the website you'll have seen we're
developing the *resources
section* from the map that you all contributed to last year. This lists our
collective projects around the country including community herbalism,
growing projects and radical practitioners. Please send us your details and
the kind of project you are if you want to be included in the lists so we
can keep the networks active.


*At the gathering this year*

If you are wondering about *volunteering* at the gathering in place of
paying, we'd like to say that this is a grassroots DIY gathering and we ask
that everyone who comes does their bit. The organising collective are all
working voluntarily. We cannot offer free entry for volunteering but we
will be offering meal tickets for dedicated support roles. Info will be up
on the website about volunteer activity that we will be looking for over
the weekend.

We are putting together the weekend's programme at the moment. We really
welcome any offers of *workshops* that relate to the gathering. Please get
in touch via workshops at radicalherbalism.org with an outline of what you
have in mind and a few words about how you think the workshop you want to
bring relates to/sits in the context of the gathering. We'll look at all
the workshop offers in March-April and figure out what is possible this
year. The programme is already looking pretty full, if we can't fit
everything into this gathering please let us know if we can keep your
workshop in mind for the next one. We do provide a ticket and travel costs
for those running workshops and encourage everyone to attend the whole
event.

The 2014 gathering will begin in a similar vein to last year, with a
*plenary* explaining why we are holding a Radical Herbal Gathering and why
we believe it is so important to put herbal medicine and health in the
context of social change. For this reason we would be really happy if you
can get to the gathering in time to be at the opening plenary at 10am on
Saturday morning which will introduce the themes of the weekend.

*This year we are going to weave together four streams of ideas:*

The first strand, will focus on workshops that offer *radical approaches to
health* in general, specifically looking at psycho-emotional health,
women's health, the use of psychotropic medicine, and alternative ideas
around birth and death.

The second strand will focus on workshops that discuss ideas around* ecological
justice* and the sustainability of conventional medicine and herbal
medicine, including the use of our native herbs.

The third strand will focus on workshops that talk about *health and social
justice issues*, for example solidarity with migrants, global corporate
violence to indigenous land and medicine, the health implications of all
the proposed fracking sites, and mutual aid within the herbal world.

We will also have a strand focused specifically on *practical herbal
medicine* which will involve herbal medicine making workshops, herbal
medicine basics, growing herbs, herbal first aid and using bodywork in
herbal medicine.  Alongside all of these, there will be herb walks and
foraging walks in the surrounding countryside.

We will post a confirmed workshop schedule by the beginning of May.

There will be a *DIY kidspace* with workshops and activities, created by
attenders - please note this is not to be a crèche. There will also be
a *wellbeing
space* for quiet time during the weekend.
