<FONT face=arial>E.On have submitted a planning application which, if approved, would allow them to generate 270 MW of electricity from burning imported virgin wood every year. At full capacity, they would burn pellets made from more than 2 million tonnes of wood annually. </FONT>

<DIV><FONT face=arial>They want to partly convert Ironbridge coal power station to biomass. Their application states that they expect that most of the wood will initially come from North America but they imply that would source it from anywhere else in the world, too. </FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=arial><BR></FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=arial>Ironbridge Power Station is one of several UK coal power stations which will have to close by 2016 because they breach EU air quality rules. This should be a perfect opportunity for the UK to move away from large, dirty, inefficient and climate-wrecking power stations and towards genuinely climate-friendly and sustainable renewables, <SPAN style="TEXT-ALIGN: left">coupled with investment in energy efficiency to reduce energy use.</SPAN> E.On and ot</FONT><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: arial">her big energy companies, however, are looking for ways to keep their power stations open and to profit in the process - and they regard conversion to biomass as a promising and profitable solution. This large new demand for wood will translate into more aggressive logging abroad and, directly or indirectly, more forests and farmlands being turned into monoculture tree plantations. And when wood from trees cut down for that purpose is burnt, it takes decades or centuries for that carbon to be absorbed again.</SPAN></DIV>
