Os experimentos parecem saídos da obra de ficção científica "Minority Report", do escritor norte-americano Philip Dick, mas são reais. No conto, que se passa no futuro, crimes de homicídio são prevenidos, graças ao auxílio de indivíduos que podem ver o futuro.</SPAN></P>
<P class=ecxMsoNormal style="VERTICAL-ALIGN: top"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 8pt; COLOR: black">Na vida real, o procedimento é baseado na chamada atividade P300, sinais elétricos que ocorrem no córtex cerebral. A equipe de cientistas responsáveis pelo estudo, liderada por J. Peter Rosenfeld, explicou à rede britânica BBC que quando uma pessoa que tem "conhecimentos escondidos" recebe estímulos relevantes, há um aumento na atividade P300 no seu cérebro.</SPAN></P>
<P class=ecxMsoNormal style="VERTICAL-ALIGN: top"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 8pt; COLOR: black">Para fazer os testes, 29 estudantes da Northwestern University planejaram um ataque terrorista fictício. Com eletrodos nas cabeças, eles observaram telas de computador que mostravam palavras, como nomes de cidade, além de imagens e sons. Os pesquisadores constataram que o nome da cidade escolhida pelos participantes como alvo do ataque fictício evocou a maior atividade das ondas P300 no cérebro dos voluntários.</SPAN></P>
<P class=ecxMsoNormal style="VERTICAL-ALIGN: top"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 8pt; COLOR: black">Quando os pesquisadores sabiam de antemão os detalhes sobre um ataque fictício, foram capazes de identificar as ondas P300 em conexão com "informações culpadas" em 100% dos casos. O que torna o estudo importante na prática, entretanto, é que mesmo quando os pesquisadores não sabiam previamente os detalhes do ataque fictício, a técnica foi capaz de identificar informações secretas relevantes em 83% dos casos.</SPAN></P>
