Current planning laws are undemocratic, according to an advisor to the
Prince of Wales.

Hank Dittmar, The Prince’s principal architecture advisor, spoke out against
the current planning laws in yesterday’s Sunday Times.

He has advocated an ‘enquiry by design’ (EBD) approach, already used by the
Scottish government and called for UK-wide adoption.

"There’s been this notion that planning and architecture belongs to experts.
If you’re not an expert, your view doesn’t count. We want to change that,"
he said.

"Our method allows local residents to actually design the masterplan of new
communities with the help of professionals. Architects then produce the
detailed designs."

EBD would give residents control in the development of new communities,
rather than planners and architects. So-called ‘people planning’ would let
the public decide what features to include and the style of architecture for
buildings.

Dittmar suggested that regional development agencies could encourage greater
public input in new building schemes.
