hi
just wanted to say hang on a minute. Whilst i don't dispute that having
the official video on the front page is a good idea, i can't help but find
the tone of this email seriously objectionable. Firstly, though there may
well be strong consensus within the media team, this does not override the
need for consensus within the web team also. be it a formality or not this
is a collaborative and decentralised approach which should take into
account the web teams need to look into the possible vulnerabilites to
cross site scripting attacks that embedding media links can lead to rather
than natively hosting them. This is important from the point of view of
the security of all users of the server and site. Also, there are
accessibility issues for those with visual impairments who require the use
of a text or braille browser which can have real problems with flash
intensive sites, particularly embeds without a descriptive alt flag. These
are website specific things that should be discussed within the working
group to be fed back to the media team before any unilateral decisions are
made.
I'm not objecting to this being done, i don't really have an opinion on
that. What i am saying however is that the web team should be able to
assess the potential security risks at all stages without someone stating
in capital letters that if jon doesn't do it then they will. I think we
all need to take a deep breath and get working in the same direction.
