Hey list,

I've put together a draft of a blog post which could go up tomorrow. I think
it would be good to get some up-to-date info on the world of climate
politics out there so that we're not all swamped by thoughts about logistics
and police.
If people are generally okay with this, then I'm happy to add some things in
tomorrow as well to keep it fresh - the links are all to recent news
stories.

----------------------------------
'Twas the night before the swoop...

All seems up in the air while the climate camp prepares to swoop, with the
economy is being predicted to swing one
way<http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/industry_sectors/support_services/article6807564.ece>,
and then the other<http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/financetopics/recession/6080523/Nouriel-Roubini-warns-threat-of-double-dip-recession-is-rising.html>.
But
when will we stop listening to the results of a survery of 1000 accountants,
and instead listen to hundreds of millions of ordinary people around the
world, whose livelihoods & communities are being threatened by our
fuel-guzzling nations?
As we lead up to the United Nations conference on climate change in
Copenhagen this December, African state leaders are making demands for
financial
compensation <http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/8217449.stm> of the
damage done to the global South by the industry-heavy global North. But
while asking for 40% emissions cuts, there's little in the way of proposing
how this can be done.

Business opportunities and bankers' initiatives as a method of 'going green'
are given the thumbs up by war
criminals<http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/china/6061978/Tony-Blair-Copenhagen-climate-summit-must-not-be-about-percentages.html>,
while the UN's own Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) has
stated that the world's largest companies are 39 years
behind<http://www.business-standard.com/india/news/biggest-global-companies-39-yrs-behind-ipcc-recommendations/71560/on>in
achieving the levels of green house gas reductions in order to avoid
the
climate tipping point of 2ºC. No wonder - even carbon trading is caught up
in back-room deals and
corruption<http://www.reuters.com/article/GCA-GreenBusiness/idUSTRE57J3BC20090820>-
as if it weren't enough of a crazy and unjust idea already!

To do this we need to take radical action. The Isle of Wight
workers<http://savevestas.wordpress.com/2009/08/23/camp-for-climate-action-this-week-why-working-class-people-should-get-involved/>show
how it's possible for even the most unlikely of places to be the
ground
for grass-roots politics. The effects of climate change are being felt by
people around the world everyday, and it's up to us to do something.

So come to the camp to build another world. We're all geared up to discuss
alternatives<http://libcom.org/library/participatory-society-or-libertarian-communism>,
how to take action against climate
criminals<http://london.indymedia.org/articles/1920>,
and to create a vision of a sustainable
world.<http://www.flickr.com/photos/40295422@N06/> Now
is the time for action!
