CLIMATE ACTIVISTS 'RAGE AGAINST' FAILED COPENHAGEN SUMMIT

This morning 15 activists from the Camp for Climate Action hung a banner
reading 'Rage Against COP15' from two tripods outside Parliament. They
were accompanied by a bike-powered sound system playing the
anti-authoritarian song 'Killing In the Name' by Rage Against the Machine.

The activists decided to take action following the failure of the United
Nations climate change summit to agree a deal to tackle global climate
change, and were inspired by the success of the campaign to make Rage
Against the Machine the Christmas Number 1.

Murray Smith, who recently returned from Copenhagen, said: "The so-called
'world leaders' have shown that they are unable to make effective
decisions and so it is now up to people to take action against the causes
of climate change."

The United Nations climate change summit in Copenhagen, officially called
'COP15', ended on Friday with a limited agreement by a handful of
countries which set out an agreement to aim to keep global temperatures
below 2°C, falling far short of the goals of the United Nations,
environmental campaign groups and many countries already affected by the
impacts of climate change and will make no impact on global emissions.

This weekend also saw the success of an online mobilisation to make Rage
Against the Machine's "Killing in the Name" the Christmas Number 1 single.
Through use of Twitter and a Facebook group of nearly 1 million members
this campaign succeeded in beating the X Factor winner Joe McElderry's
"The Climb" to the Christmas Number One.

Murray Smith continued: "Over the last 2 weeks we have seen the very worst
from the negotiations in Copenhagen - we have seen democratic protest
brutalised, seen the voices of society removed from the talks, and
narrow-minded, self interested heads of state refusing to come together
for an effective agreement.

"All of the Western countries were more interested in protecting business
as usual rather than meaningful actions to avoid catastrophic human
impacts from climate change."

Jane Thompson from the group said: "The campaign to make Rage Against the
Machine the Christmas Number 1 shows how people can achieve remarkable
results when they work together. The Rage Against the Machine campaign
mobilised at a grass roots level against the dominance of X Factor and its
failure to produce good music.

"We now need people at a grass roots level to mobilise together against
the failure of governments to tackle climate change."
