am i right in thinking that the site is currently offline? Do you have the
domain name registration yourselves or did that come as part of a package
with your previous hosts.
I think a good first step would be to get a copy of the site as it is now
on the server so it can be up in the meantime whilst it is transferred if
this is what is going to be done. I've agreed to help you sort all this
out so can make time on tuesday to do it.
As regards ftp access, you need to check that the software you use
supports the sftp protocol and public key login (which most modern
software will) as traditional ftp is rarely used anymore as it is very
insecure.
If you email me off list this weekend i'll help you set up a keypair.
