CALL FOR THE CLIMATE ACTION CAMP IN THE RHINELAND COALFIELD (3 - 12 August in Manheim near Cologne)

Already in 2011, more than 200 activists and concerned people camped in the orchard in Manheim – this year the camp will be even bigger and more colourful. The camp sees itself as a part of the international climate camp-movement, which is based on four main pillars: (direct) actions, low-footprint practices, emancipatory education and networking. ++++ SUMMER OF ENERGY CAMPS +++++

The Climate Action Camp is part of the campaign „ausgeCO2hlt“ which demands the immediate phase-out of soft-coal mining. Moreover, it is connected to the squat in the Hambacher Forest, which exists since April 2012 and which is directed against the extension of the open-cast coal mine Hambach (more on  hambacherforst.blogsport.de). 
The Camps sees itself as a part of the movement for energy souvereignty and is closely linked to the climate camps in the Lusatia and near Leipzig. For the first time there will be protests against the destruction of our climate IN ALL THREE German soft coal fields, all over August! Be a part of this summer of energy camps!

++++ UNITING SOCIAL AND ECOLOGICAL STRUGGLES ++++

However, the camp isn’t just about coal. Climate Change is a problem that lies at the root of our society, and that we have to tackle from all sides. That’s why agriculture activists meet here as well as Anti-Racist Groups, the Anti-Nuclear-Movement as well as critics of the financial market. The topics of the social movements are closely interwoven. Together we are against a capitalist system that is based on the subjection of all living things. That’s why you should come to the Rhineland! Form affinity groups or even your own barrio on the camp! Let’s make the Rhineland Coalfield a hot spot of resistance against coal-mining! And against all power structures which are based on the destruction of our life’s fundaments – in Rhineland and worldwide!

++++ PROGRAMME AND ACTIONS +++++

We have a manifold workshop programme: people from different movements present their work and share their knowledge: practical or theoretical, English or German, for people who are deeply into a topic as well as for people who just really want to start! Apart from that, spontaneous workshops on camp are more than welcome! At the last camp weekend (10 August – 11 August) we want to celebrate together with a massive culture and music festival. Last year there were several actions that took part during the time of the camp: a 12-hour-blockade of a coal train, small group actions, bike demonstrations, vigils. This year there will be a bike demonstration to the open-cast coal mine Hambach on August 5. Moreover there will be a day of action in the Rhineland Coalfield. For the preparation of this action day it’s essential that you arrive on Sunday AT THE LATEST. There will be only few bikes to borrow on the camp. Please, if possible, bring your own bike! 

Setting up the camp starts already on July 31. And we need a lot of crafty helping hands! If you are interested in building compost toilets, solar panels, or in constructing solar showers, you are more than welcome to arrive a few days earlier!
