10 Theses of a critique of the Green Economy

Working Group ‘societal relationships with nature’ (GesNat) of the  
Federal Coordination of Internationalismus (Bundeskoordination  
Internationalismus – BUKO )


It used to be called sustainability, but today it is the ‘ Green  
Economy ’. Sustainability was the promise for the ecological  
modernisation of crisis-laden capitalism together with few – or plenty  
– social elements. And this is what the Green Economy is about. In the  
following 10 theses we will show why the Green Economy will have to  
fail in meeting its claim of greening the economy, which is due to the  
prevailing capitalist and imperialist conditions as well as the  
unquestioned faith in progress. Strategies of the Green Economy will  
not be able to outweigh the social and ecological contradictions of  
capitalism, at best the strategies are able to revise these  
contradictions. Put differently: capitalist modes of production never  
operate according to the reproductive needs of humans and nature, who  
in fact pose limits to the process of production. A Green Economy will  
only be able to reposition these limits. We therefore argue that  
dealing with the current crises in an emancipatory, internationalist  
and solidarity-based manner has to involve a change in the given  
economic structures and prevailing power relations.

Después del fracaso de la «economía verde»
10 tesis para una crítica de la «economía verde»

Grupo de trabajo Relaciones Sociales con la Naturaleza (GesNat) del  
BUKO (Bundeskoordination Internationalismus)


Antes dominaba el término «sostenibilidad», hoy es « Green Economy ».  
Sostenibilidad era la promesa de la modernización ecológica del  
capitalismo en crisis con elementos más o menos sociales. De esto  
trata también la «economía verde». Mostramos en 10 tesis por qué la «  
economía verde » tiene que fracasar ante la exigencia de una  
ecologización de la economía bajo las circunstancias capitalistas e  
imperiales existentes y ante el credo no criticado del desarrollo. Las  
estrategias de la « economía verde » no pueden anular las paradojas  
sociales y económicas del capitalismo, sino sólo las pueden cambiar.  
En otras palabras: La manera capitalista de producir no basa en las  
necesidades de la reproducción del ser humano y de la naturaleza, que  
a la vez representan los límites de la producción. Una «economía  
verde» sólo traslada estos límites. Constatamos que el tratamiento de  
las crisis actuales de una forma emancipador, internacionalista y  
solidaria tiene que implicar un cambio profundo de las relaciones de  
poder.

10 Thesen zur Kritik der Grünen Ökonomie

Arbeitsschwerpunkt Gesellschaftliche Naturverhältnisse (GesNat) der  
Bundeskoordination Internationalismus


Früher war »Nachhaltigkeit«, heute ist »Green Economy«. Nachhaltigkeit  
war das Versprechen der ökologischen Modernisierung des krisenförmigen  
Kapitalismus mit mehr oder weniger sozialen Elementen – und darum geht  
es auch bei Green Economy. In 10 Thesen zeigen wir, warum die Green  
Economy am Anspruch einer Ökologisierung der Wirtschaft unter den  
gegebenen kapitalistischen und imperialen Verhältnissen und vor dem  
Hintergrund eines unhinterfragten Fortschrittsglaubens scheitern muss.  
Green Economy Strategien können die sozialen und ökologischen  
Widersprüche des Kapitalismus nicht aufheben, sondern allenfalls neu  
bearbeiten. Anders formuliert: Die kapitalistische Produktionsweise  
orientiert sich nicht an den Reproduktionsnotwendigkeiten von Mensch  
und Natur, die jedoch faktische Grenzen der Produktion darstellen.  
Durch eine Green Economy können diese nur verschoben werden. Wir  
argumentieren, dass die Bearbeitung gegenwärtiger Krisen in einem  
emanzipatorischen, internationalistischen und solidarischen Sinne mit  
einer Veränderung der bestehenden Wirtschafts- und  
Herrschaftsverhältnisse einhergehen muss.
