*Gentrification: The Politics of Inequality*

Just prior to the Olympic Games, wealthy condo marketer Bob Rennie said,
"Nobody wants to admit it, but Vancouver has become a resort city where rich
foreigners live a few months per year ... It's a $6-billion ad buy [with the
Olympics]. There's never been anything like it. It will change Vancouver,
forever." (Vancouver Sun, 25 Jan 2010). A few weeks after the Olympics, he
told investors, "I don't think, as positive as I am, that I understand how
[much] the world loves Vancouver. ... It's a very safe place to invest, it's
a safe place to park money.” (Vancouver Sun, 27 March 2010) Between these
statements there was a homeless count in Vancouver that showed a 12%
increase in homelessness. Vancouver, a “world-class” city ... for whom?
