great job on the splash page!!!
Some comments:
i agree that that there needs to be a clear link to the main site.
Perhaps a prominent "Enter the site" button
The other links could perhaps be under the heading "quick links".
And I think there should be way fewer - the point is that this should
be for first time users to get a quick intro to the main points, so
i would be have less stuff, not more.  The legal and medical etc. are
things that people will mostly get when they arrive.  We could always
include links for their pages from the "Practical info" section.

i agree that travel should point to the simple travel page first,
rather than the current one.

items which i would remove:
publicity and downloads
site map
convergence centres latest.

All this can be found from the main site very easily.

i would change "accomodation" to "practical info."
i would change "media" to "contact us" and have it point
to that page (which contains a link to media).

Also, many people did like the "Violent extremists..." text,
I don't think it is reacting to the media, I think it is spot
on.
