I don't think i'm going to the nottingham meeting as i'm already commited to going to a wedding. We really need to get some basic web training for people e.g. for uploading publicity, news, calender items as well as maintaining pages for working groups etc. Can anyone commit to offering this and ensuring there is time for it etc at the gathering. I still don't know what i'll be doing around the actual summit but sitting in front of a computer is not high on my agenda - but good updating of the site will be important and so we need to make sure lots of people are being pro-active a and some one is tidying it up. (well maybe not so much around the summit but definately in the build up). What do you guys think? Maybe we could advertise a meeting time at the gathering and training times beforehand? love T From julichan at no-log.org Fri May 6 07:05:48 2005 From: julichan at no-log.org (julichan at no-log.org) Date: Fri, 6 May 2005 08:05:48 +0200 (CEST) Subject: [dissent-tech] Paris Message-ID: <49252.julichan.1115359548.squirrel@webmail.no-log.org> Hi everyone, I am not sure I am writing to the appropriate list, but I have some questions and dont know where to send them. We are trying to mobilize people from France to come to the G8. We are thinking on going there by bus. Which means gathering with many other buses from Europe, in Calais (in order to avoid being blocked by the police), on the 2nd of July, and move up North to Scotland. Have you heard about other European groups ? What do they plan ? Do you seen any problems in doing what I previously explained ? We heard of two convergence center, one in Edimburg or Glasgow and one in the countryside ? Where should we go to ? Message-ID: <20050507123234.97971.qmail@web25701.mail.ukl.yahoo.com> Hiya, Just a few comments/suggestions about the web page. 1) To be clear about the www.international.dissent.org.uk (or what ever it is) web page. Someone was going to use this as a page to store translated documents on. It was supposed to be an easy to navigate site and only contain the essential information. The person who took this on hasn't had the time to see it through and, as far as I know, isn't likely too either. 2) I also think that the website could do with a serious aesthetic overhall. Let's try and find someone skilled in web design to have a go at this. A while ago, someone suggested the people who put together the McSpotlight website and the people involved in the J18 website should be approached. Both these sites ended up winning awards for their appearance, content, ease of navigation etc... and they were put together by movement people. I'll try and track them down. For anyone thinking about putting together a website, I think that (regardless of the content of the websites) the following sites are all stylistically different from one another but are each provide good models of an attractive, straightforward and easy to navigate website and the sort of thing we should be aiming towards: http://www.antifaschistische-aktion.com/ http://www.ukesf.net/en/ http://www.kp-berlin.de/ http://www.indymedia.org.uk/ http://www.stressfaktor.squat.net/ 3) Sorry, I still don't have an access code for uploading stuff onto the website. Can someone update the "Donations" sub-section with the new info: Donate against the G8! Donations can now be made via the Dissent! webpage! or visit www.tenpounds.org This July, the G8 is coming to Gleneagles, Scotland. The Dissent! Network is mobilising to ensure that the Summit does not pass by uncontested. Preparations are well underway and we have found a Convergence Centre. However, we urgently need funds to pay for the massive ammount of resources needed to accommodate the 10's of thousands of protesters expected. We estimate that we need to raise a further ?30,000!! Please make a generous donation to the Dissent! Other payment methods are available on our webpage. How You Can Help: * Forward this email, and get in touch with people or organisations you know who might have available funds or be able to help raise funds. * Help with our Ten Pounds Appeal at http://www.tenpounds.org * Host events in your local area to both raise funds and awareness. * ask websites to link to our donate button at http://www.dissent.org.uk/donate.html Additional fundraising ideas can be found at: www.dissent.org.uk/content/view/90/66/ For more information on the Dissent! Network, visit www.dissent.org.uk To contact us with questions, or to get help with fundraising, email: dissent-funding (at) lists.riseup.net That's it for now. See ya! And nice one to all those who have done an excellent job of maintaining the website up until now. Hope this is considered constructive input rather than criticism. I've got a few other suggestions about how to make the site a bit easier to use and a little easier to navigate. Seeing as I *still* haven't gotton around to getting an access code or trained up on how to become an administrator (I did kind of try, actually, but time ran out with having to do other, more pressing things at the gathering) I'm not sure if my comments are being taken as useful comments or as an obnoxious "you lot should be doing it like this." I hope its the former rather than the latter. Please feel free to let me know if suggestions such as these are unhelpful. 1) I think the look of the homepage would be greatly imporved if the distinction between articles was made clearer (perhaps each one being in its own little box) and if the article followed a standard format in terms of look. For example, the headline could all be in 12 point Ariel Bold, the name of the author and date of posting in 8 point Ariel, and the body of the article in 10 point Tahoma (just a random example, by the way). The site might look a bit less "messy" then. I really think the IMC UK site is a good model here. Lots of articles, lots of info, but the subsections and various stories are clearly defined from one another. 2) I'm confussed as to why the info under "Get Involved" is not under the "Convergence Info" sub-section. I'd say that the "Get Involved" section should read something like this: "The 2005 G8 Summit is rapidly approaching. Preparations are well underway, but there is still an enormous amount left to do. Now is the time to get involved! Dissent! is a network of autonomous local groups, based in towns and cities across the UK and further afield. The best way to get involved is to contact your local group. A list of Dissent! Network affiliated local groups can be found here [INSERT LINK]. If you are based in Ireland [INSERT LINK TO IRISH DISSENT! NETWORK], German-speaking parts of Europe [INSERT LINK TO GERMAN LANGUAGE SITE HERE], the Netherlands [INSERT DUTCH MOBILISATION SITE HERE], France [INSERT LINK TO FRENCH MOBILISATION HERE], or Greece [INSERT LINK TO GREEK ANTI-AUTHORITARIAN MOVEMENT SPECIAL G8 SITE HERE], contact your local mobilisation and find out how to get involved. Dissent! also consists of a number of Working Groups focussing on different aspects of the mobilisation - from action planning to practical logisitics. Get involved with the particular aspect of the mobilisation which most interests you, or that you think you have the most to offer. A list of Working Groups is available here [INSERT LINK TO WORKING GROUP LIST HERE]. In particular, help is needed with the Convergence Centre (more info here: [INSERT LINK TO THE CONVERGENCE INFO SECTION HERE]) and fundraising. A list of tips on how to fundraise, and methods of paying money into the Dissent! bank account are available here [INSERT LINK TO FUNDING SECTION]. The Convergence Centre will be an open space to come along, meet others and plan action! Come along as early as possible, bring your own ideas and any resources you think might be useful and get involved!" All the info currently in the "Get Involved" section could then be put in the "Convergence Info" section under the information that is already there. 3) Just to make it a little clearer, in the "Contact Us" section, it'd maybe be good to change the bit saying "International Networking: info-g82005 at riseup.net" so it just says "If you are based outside of the UK, for more information contact: info-g82005 at riseup.net" just 'cos international networking is a little ambiguous. 4) In the "Sections" section, can there be a link to the Days of Dissent: Reflections on Summit Mobilisations magazine. Perhaps the whole title of the magazine could go in there, or just Reflections on Summit Mobilisations, if there's not room. The domain is: www.daysofdissent.org.uk 5) I think the "look" of the site would be much improved by making the banner at the top a bit more funky. The little graphic in the top right hand corner is a little odd and the font could be a bit more exciting. I'll see if I can find a nicer font and a picture to suggest as the banner. Or we could all ask around amongst any designers to see if anyone's up for sorting out a nice banner. That's all. Again, hope its more useful than annoying having someone without access posting to this list. See you all in Notts! They want to save the environment by killing off Nature and Fellow species so that ever more humans can "survive". They make consumption more expensive so that they can demand more income to pay for it; in effect nothing humans have done has either decreased their numbers nor their insane destructive consumption. The global money supply explosion over the last 50 years speaks for itself. The fact that every job costs on average 10KW per hour, produces about 6,5 tonnes of CO2 emissions p.a. involves around 5,500 miles of polluting travel p.a. and creates more than 365,000 kgs. of waste p.a. is ignored by the Kyoto charlatans who are crying out for ever more economic growth and job creation. Only idiots cannot see this. Consequently they are destroying everything that's not human made; exterminating in the process all major Fellow Species and Natural Habitat. No animal would be stupid enough to wipe out its life support system other than humans. By converting all Natural Values into money humans have created a suicidal economic system whereby the more they destroy through consumption; i.e. economic growth - the greater the financial rewards of the destroyer and consequential increased valuation of the diminishing remains of Nature; i.e. Land/Water/Air which ironically produces the illusory profits/finance - as resources run out/become scarce and hence increase in cost - that increase and accelerate the process of destruction that ultimately will be killing off the humans themselves. In a grotesque charade of financial acumen - humans "value" the most successful Nature and Fellow Species destroyers in ever higher monetary values on the stock markets in a gigantic wealth explosion that finances ever more of the same amongst those who control the destruction engines that expand their destruction activities in a limitless spiral that is ultimately self-destructive. Unlike ordinary animals who don't have delusions of planet domination humans are so self-engrossed that they can't see the madness of their over-proliferating/over-populating quantum impact. More humans=more consumption=more automated mass-production/chain sales=less jobs for the poor=more wealth for the rich=more investment in more of the same=global habitat/fellow species destruction=environmental suicide. Dividing the ever smaller resources amongst ever larger numbers of humans is creating an ever greater flood of money that accelerates the process of resource depletion thereby forcing the breeding of ever more consumers - who will be tomorrow's victims - to prevent the self-inflating, churning bogus economy from collapsing. In an insane process of global hongkongisation/sardineisation humans replace Nature and Fellow Species with infrastructure that causes all the problems including sickness, illness, diseases, injuries, poverty, accidents, ignorance, insanity, addictions, infernal noise, racism, xenophobia, crime, violence, nature and fellow species destruction and general ego-centric hooliganism which they combat with more infrastructure like a malignant cancer that cannot stop as long as there is something to attack and to destroy including itself. Cancers grow and die with the bodies they attack. The carbon fuel depletion will lead to a new nuclear overproliferation that will turn the planet into a radioactive waste dump because there is not sufficient land or water for infernal, forest/bird-killing wind turbines and solar panels to power 6500 million humans increasing at more than 80 million every year. Ever more humans cause heavy metal/plastic poisoned fish, agri-chemical/pesticide riddled food/water and polluted air yet they don't have the brains to correlate the quantum of their over-population to that of their self-destruction. Most scientists work on tiny little samples in minute parameters and - unlike Einstein - cannot see or understand the global picture. Since Einstein's death humans have more than doubled their numbers and more than quintupled their destructive quantum impact. When they discover the odd speck of Nature so far left untouched they immediately promote it as a development opportunity under the global motto of: IF IT DOESN'T MAKE MONEY IT ISN'T WORTH SAVING. This is how the humans have cretinised themselves to such an extent that the only sense they can make of their absurd global over-proliferation is by multiplying themselves in ever greater numbers believing that they are the only valid species on the planet and have a god given right to over-populate and exterminate all other species and destroy/pollute/poison their habitat which they call "wealth creation, progress, civilisation, freedom, justice even peace"; (sustained by deliberate and successful international government policy to share nothing other than ignorance and endless hype/lies) that's why they cannot even read or understand _www.equalearth.org_ (http://www.equalearth.org) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... And sending texts is helpful, as long as there is someone willing to upload them and add in links. This i think is a real killer, as there are too few people doing this, and mostly people already doing too many things. The "Get involved" text that revolting suggested could also include some stuff about the elist and announce list. I am pretty well out of commission this week, so sorry to also be on the unhelpful side... I would just add that what would improve the site a lot is if the first item at the top of the news section was something funky, and graphic, with links to the international sites so that people looking for the .de or .fr could get there quickly. It could even include some of the "get involved text". The admins would then have to make sure that it was always the top item of approved news, which might be a pain. it seems the problem with this happening is just that everyone keeps saying this, but no one does it. Yet both the S.E. forum and tenpounds have funky sites, so we do have the skills within. Both the resources section and the intro to g8 section also need some more text and work. I think it would be good to have a brief g8 faq which dispels a lot of the PR fluff that blair is putting out. I think this needs to be the very first point we address. Finally, the media section needs some work, eg. links to groups which can comment on specific issues (eg rising tide), etc. and links to a nice g8 faq. There is some text for this floating around, and i can send it to anyone who has some time to put it up. sorry to also be unhelpful, and feel free to tell me to jump. xoj On Mon, 9 May 2005, revolting wrote: > I think the changes are really helpful. The only things I'd suggest adding would be a link to the page with the Peoples Global Action call and the WSF Caracol call. It also has info about the global mobilisation (or will have at somepoint). The link, which I'd suggest comes at the end of the section on the "Global Day of Action 6th July", is http://www.nadir.org/nadir/initiativ/agp/resistg8/index.htm Also (still in the "Action Info" section), it might be worth adding this link to a whole bunch of maps of the area: http://www.nadir.org/nadir/initiativ/agp/resistg8/index.htm --------------------------------- How much free photo storage do you get? This was what was done with germany, as far as i know. If you need an actual webserver, I would suggest emailing the main elist and asking someone to let you use theirs. In the meantime, you can always create content on the main dissent site, and submit it as news (use the "submit news") feature. Then email the dissent-tech list, and they can link it to the international pages, so that people will see it when they click on international sites. You first need to create an account. One thought, I'm unsure about the function of the links on the front page. The ones which read: "Great Britain - Deutsch - Francais - Greek - Belgium - Ireland". Some of these are the names of countries, and some are the names of the/a langauge spoken in different countries. I'd say that it should either read: "Great Britain - Deutschland - France - Greece - Belgium - Ireland" and then link to the mobilisations from those areas. Or, better, I think, It should say something like: "Mobilisations against the 2005 G8 Summit are being organised by people based in the following places: Great Britain - German-speaking parts of Europe - France - Greece - Belgium - Ireland" Or since it seems a bit odd to have a link to the mobilisation in Great Britain from the Dissent! site (the link just links back to the same page). The following might be better: "Mobilisations against the 2005 G8 Summit are also being organised by people based in the following places: German-speaking parts of Europe - France - Greece - Belgium - Ireland" If people think that makes sense, it'd be great if someone could change it. I removed the GB as indeed no need, but left as is so far for some one else to work out. But main thing is as soon as I saw those lines From July 6-8th, violent extremists will be converging on Scotland... They'll be trying to meet at the Gleneagles hotel, and we'll be trying to stop them. I did not like them. It is too much of a response to the agenda set by the media. Also I don't think such jokes work well on the Internet. Also some one has modify that article to add a new announcement it is probably best to do that a new article but I reckon that was put there but someone new to the admin interface: http://www.dissent.org.uk/administrator/index2.php It seems a new article happened as I wrote this. Also I have put up on wiki page: http://www.ourmayday.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?G8_Scotland_Summary and started to modify the text put together for the international meeting. I think it needs more work, so feel feel to modify as you see fit. It has been suggested to use this as basis for some static web pages, that have been suggested at many a meeting but never done. btw if you still use it as a web browser do ditch MicroSoft Internet Explorer and instead use some thing like Firefox see: http://mozilla.org Keep up good work all those who are collecting stuff and adding it to the site, to keep it up todate. I have made some changes requested on this list but not all and we are a behind with responding to requests. At further meetings is is a good idea to actively recruit more people to do this, and get them to realise how straight forward it is. Despite every time anything to do with website is brought up at meeting many role their eyes and want to move one, I wonder is these are same people who later complain about the website. Perhaps plug where appropriate in messages to lists promote: http://dissent.org.uk/index.php?option=com_registration&task=register and then ask people for user name at meeting so can up to editor status so they can add stuff straight away rather than via moderation, as it is often a while before any one checks if stuff to approve. I have also been moderation this list on my own, after person who set it up let it go and hence delays in mail getting through if anyone wants to help then let me know. Also for a while I was updating with press article links: http://del.icio.us/Dissent but have lapsed. And no longer sure if worth time. If anyone wants the password to continue doing that let me know. I think it makes it easier to see what a specific journalist has written but there a again a web search and a little extra time may be just as good. There is a much cruder list at: http://www.ourmayday.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?G8_News_Clippings But AnRo is making a good job of keeping up with copies at: http://www.nadir.org/nadir/initiativ/agp/resistg8/media/ which helps people who avoid adverts or don't want to sign up on sites. Of course there is: http://news.google.co.uk/news?hl=en&ned=uk&q=g8&btnG=Search+News But be aware of google's poor regard to privacy: http://www.google-watch.org/ http://www.scroogle.org/ -- -- http://j12.org/sb/ From tabitha747 at riseup.net Mon May 30 14:52:51 2005 From: tabitha747 at riseup.net (tabitha747 at riseup.net) Date: Mon, 30 May 2005 06:52:51 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [dissent-tech] Guide to using the web In-Reply-To: <006601c56241$9604f230$7178893e@sarahlaptop> References: <006601c56241$9604f230$7178893e@sarahlaptop> Message-ID: <34517.tabitha747.1117461171.squirrel@mail.riseup.net> I have put this up on the web - its under web admin in the get involved bit. Also i'm going to use it as a basis for a standard reply to requests to upload info cos it something everyone needs to get into doing (loads of people have accounts!). love T Brief Guide to Using the Dissent! Website This website is open publishing. Many people find the website busy and a bit overwhelming but if you take some time to familiarise yourself with it it should eventually begin to make sense! If you wish to upload information you need to create an account. Do this by clicking on the 'No account yet? Create one' link on the left hand side bar. Once you have been issued with a user name and password you can log in to the site. When you are logged on the user menu appears above the 'log in' module. From here the main options are 'submit news' and 'submit event'. To 'submit news' Once you have clicked on this option you will be taken to an add content page. Please add your content ensuring that all articles have a very concise introduction and the main body of text/images are put in the 'main text' section. You will need to select a category: Events/Gatherings ? This is for events related to Dissent not covered by the other options, e.g. information nights and benefit gigs and for info on network wide gatherings. Translation ? This is for any translated information. If the translation is of an article or section that is already on the website please follow these instructions so that a link can be made from the article in English to the translated article. In the title box give the title of the article in the translation language but with the name of that language in brackets in English. Please include at the end of the article the title of the article in English with the translation language name in its translated form in brackets. Please e-mail the web team so they know there is a new article to link. Action Info ? This is for any action related information, from practical/tactical to events. Support Group Info ? This is for news on or any new information from support groups (e.g.. publications, trainings, education, medical and legal). Convergence Info- This is for any practical information that relates to the convergence spaces or visiting Scotland Resources Info - This is for news on any useful information resources e.g. publications Newsletter ? This is for any articles or reports that do not fit into the above sections or would not be classified as news. Please then go to the publishing tag at the bottom of the page. You should at least change the 'state' option from unpublished to published. The title of all new articles will appear on the 'Recent Info' module on the right hand sidebar. If your article is of high importance and you want it to go on the front page instead please click 'front page' box on this page. Please note there are currently technical problems with the front page. Once you have finished remember to click the save icon! To 'Submit Event' This will add details to the events calender, which is currently placed on the right hand sidebar. This section is fairly self explanatory, please follow the online instructions. Other sections you may find useful: Document Downloads This section allows you to upload files for others to download. To add (or access) a document go the main menu > resources > document downloads. You do ot need to be logged in if you want to download a document/file. If you are logged in a 'submit a new document' icon will appear at the right hand side of the document download page. Please follow the instructions on this page. Please take some time to look at the categories: Working Group Meeting Minutes: This is for meeting that happen outside of network wide gatherings. Publicity: with the following subcategories Flyers Information about the G8 Logos and Artwork Poster Press Releases Past Mobilisation Gathering Documents: with the following subcategories Agendas Discussion Documents/Proposals Introduction Packs Invites Minutes Newsletters Action Information- You can upload calls to action directly onto the calls to action pages. Go to the main menu > Action Info. At the bottom of this page are links to the call to action pages. If you click on one of these pages (either build up or g8 Summit) and are logged in you can click on the 'new...' which will appear near the bottom of the page. Follow the online instructions (this page has the same format as the news add content page). Please ignore the category Derby M17.
