Subject: [staff-mgmt-supp] University to establish a Commission to review Divestment

Dear Colleagues

University to establish a Commission to review Divestment

I am writing to let you know that Council has agreed that a Commission be established by UEC to review the issue of University investment in the fossil fuel industry and the consequences of possible divestment.

This development responds to increasing interest from students and staff in the issue and recognition by UEC of the need to listen to a breadth of views from across the University community and to consult with elected student representatives.

The University has consulted with Durham Students' Union on the scope of this work and, having listened to their views, the Commission will consider divestment from companies "that participate in exploration for and/or extraction of fossil fuel reserves".

The Commission will be co-ordinated, under my leadership, by Dr Amanda Ellison, and membership will comprise student body representatives as well as staff representatives, the Chief Financial Officer, Sally McGill, and the Director of Governance and Executive Support, Kate Deeming.

All staff and students will be given the opportunity to contribute to the review.

The Commission will hold its first meeting at the beginning of the 2016/17 academic year, and regular updates will be available via the dedicated webpage: www.durham.ac.uk/divestment<http://www.durham.ac.uk/divestment>.

Best wishes,

Professor David Cowling

Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Arts and Humanities)
