We were warned last November during the COP22 climate talks in Marrakesh that if global temperatures exceed 1.5 degrees then society as we know it would be irreversibly changed. This threat has been magnified by the pledged bonfire of regulations from political events in the United Kingdom and the United States. We need the moral leadership of our universities.

This is People & Planet's 10th annual Go Green Week and we are happy to announce that St Andrews has shown that leadership and removed its £50m endowment fund from the fossil fuel industry. This follows our 17-month Fossil Free St Andrews campaign.

This means that almost half of Scottish universities have now taken action to divest from the fossil fuel industry. Help spread the word:

Kings College is showing less moral leadership. We have undertaken daring and creative direct action each week of this term – chalking “out of time – divest from all fossil fuels now” on the front of the Kings building and putting similar slogans in the large entrance hall of Kings the following week. As a result two students were arrested – the first time this has happened at Kings for decades. Seven other students have been threatened with suspension and charges of criminal damage or banned from entering Kings.

We will not be intimidated by such threats and will continue to escalate our campaign until the corporate bosses who run the institution accept our demand. This is too important to back down on. Today we are back again decorating the front of Kings with balloons, flour, statements and blobs of poster paint.

You can help by contacting the King’s President to show him this is a national issue. Complain about the treatment of students and demand the college stops suspending and starts divesting!
