Hello
It was a great meeting at Meadowbank on Wednesday night, there was standing
room only with over 70 people, overwhelmingly residents, present. There was
strong feeling of opposition to the councils ABM (Alternative Business
Models) privatisation proposals. The most common question from the audience
for the councillors present was “Where is the Consultation?”.
If the public are not consulted how can the council effectively know how we
use our services and what we want and expect from them. Without this
information the council cannot even draw up an effective contract for the
bidders.
It was clear the councillors were not aware of many facts and figures behind
the proposals, despite the significance of handing over a billion pounds of
public services to the private sector. But due to the pressure the
councillors did commit to finding out more and to speak to their colleagues
with the concerns raised.
Another good outcome of Wednesday was that residents, and an MSP, from other
areas of Edinburgh were inspired enough to say they would organise three
further meetings in their localities - Burdiehouse, Leith and St Leonards.
Please get in touch if you want to be part of this.
If you want to organise a meeting in your area Unison is committed to
supporting you, with publicity leaflets etc. so please get in touch (details
