Request for participation
March 4 Day of Action at UCSD

We need all TAs and Professors who are teaching on Thursday,
March 4 to participate in these actions.
To: all TAs and Instructors
From: UCSD Coalition for Educational Justice
http://ucsdcoalitionforeducationaljustice.wordpress.com/
On March 4th, workers and students in all sectors of public education will participate in actions to raise awareness about the immediate and long-term effects of state defunding of education, and the trend toward privatization at the UC. This historic statewide day of action brings together stakeholders who’ve traditionally competed for education dollars and unites us in an effort to once again make education spending a priority for the State of California.
The UC San Diego Coalition for Educational Justice is an organization comprised of students, workers, staff members, and faculty who have joined in a struggle to transform the University of California into a truly democratic and transparent institution accessible to ALL Californians. As concerned parties, we call on all constituencies at UCSD to stand in solidarity with students and workers participating the protest activities state-, nation- and world-wide on March 4th.a

On March 4th, we call on all to:

TEACH OUT!
We call on all UCSD faculty and teaching assistants to take their classes outside; to take over the public spaces on campus; to model what access and public education. Teach out to speak out against the privatization of UCSD.

WALK OUT!
We call on all students and workers to walk out; to suspend “business as usual” and march in the support of:
· Affordability and accessibility to our public university
· Public support for our public university
· Respect and protection for our workers
· The Democratization of our public university
· Open our public university to its public

AGENDA:

Teach Out:
· We are asking that classes be held at the regular time and material scheduled for that day be taught as usual. However, instead of having class within the assigned classroom, we are asking that it be held outdoors, publicly, in and around central campus.
· If your classes are too large to be held outside, we then ask that instead of the regularly scheduled lecture, you conduct a teach-in instead.
For more information on holding classes outside and for help with scheduling a space, please contact José Fusté (jfuste at ucsd.edu).
If you are planning on teaching out, please email us. We want to keep a record of who’s doing what on that day.
For resources on conducting a teach-in, please visit our resources webpage at:

Walk Out:
· We are asking students and workers to walk-out at 11.45 AM and assemble for a rally at Gilman Parking Structure.
· At 12.30 PM we will march from Gilman to the Silent Tree outside Giesel Library and rally there.
For more information on the walk-out and march, please contact Leslie Quintanilla (dallijq at yahoo.com).
                                                             In solidarity,
                                                             UCSD Coalition for Educational Justice
