Hello,
Just an FYI, the BOT already voted this morning to increase our CSU fees. I
listened to the live stream of the meeting.

Here is a statement from Assembly Member Block....

Assembly Higher Education Chair Marty Block Issues Statement on CSU Trustees
Vote to Increase Student Fees Featured
Assembly Higher Education Committee Chair Marty Block (AD-78) issued the
following statement after the California State University (CSU) Board of
Trustees voted to approve a mid-year fee increase and an additional increase in
fees for the 2011-2012 academic year:
“Fee increases have become a difficult trend in these tough economic times, but
they cannot become the norm for addressing the fiscal challenges plaguing our
public higher education system. While raising the cost of college may ease
short-term financial problems, those gains will be quickly outweighed by the
negative impact fee increases can have on limiting student access and decreasing
retention rates across campuses.
“In an era of high fees, students rely on financial aid, Cal Grants and other
forms of assistance to stay in the classroom. Without it some students have to
put their classes on hold until they can afford to continue their education.
That is why, given the troubling nature of these increases, it is imperative
that financial aid keep pace when fees go up. It is encouraging to see
institutions recognizing that, and taking action to expand their financial aid
programs to help students stay on track toward completing their degree.
“Increasing the cost of attending a CSU or UC translates to more money from the
pockets of students already struggling with multiple jobs and heavy class loads.
To ease this burden, we need to be looking at longer-term fixes to the chronic
underfunding of higher education, and when fee increases are on the table they
must be low and predictable.
“These increases shine light on a broken system and as Chair of the Assembly
Higher Education Committee, I look forward to working with Governor-elect Brown
to explore real solutions and to develop a long-term vision for how we are going
to maintain excellent and affordable higher education systems that will ensure
we are able to produce enough college graduates to keep California competitive
in a global economy.”

Hello,
Today the CSU Board of Trustees will vote yea or nea to increase student fees 15
%! 5% for Spring 2011 and 10% for Fall 2011. Students are gathering I

California State Chancellor Office 401 Golden Shore
Long Beach, CA 90802

If you are near, or if you know anyone that's near LA or Long Beach please go
there and join other students who are already there! Currently no-one from CSU
Long Beach has been in communication with any other students activist!

Yesterday there was a great amount of media coverage for the 25 or so students
that were there. The greater number of students the greater media coverage there
will be. Citizen in the state of California MUST know what is happening.
Students don't have access to public relation people to get the word out nor do
we have the money to pay for TV, and newspaper ad. We have our voices and when
we gather in large numbers, the media pays attention. Its the best advertising
method students have (and except for the cost of gas or bus fare) its FREE.
