The Jobs Crisis: What Did Roosevelt Do That Obama Should?
Martin Bennett and Richard Walker, Truthout: "The original version of President Obama's increasingly embattled jobs plan aimed to provide a much-needed extension of unemployment benefits and a payroll tax cut for working Americans, but outlined only scarce measures to dent the catastrophic rate of unemployment. What we need today is a massive jobs program like the Works Progress Administration (WPA) launched by President Franklin Roosevelt."

AT&T merger looks iffy
New York Times
WASHINGTON – AT&T and T-Mobile USA appeared to edge closer to scrapping their proposed merger, saying Thursday that they had withdrawn their application to the Federal Communications Commission to join their cellular phone operations. Deutsche Telekom, parent of T-Mobile, and AT&T said in a joint statement that they still intended to pursue the $39 billion merger and would prepare for a federal antitrust lawsuit that is seeking to block the deal. - Read More

NEWS: Celebrating Los Angeles' first unionized car wash!

Celebrating Los Angeles' first unionized car wash

Carwasheros' rights are human rights

Next time you need a clean car, go to Bonus Car
Wash at 2800 Lincoln Boulevard in Santa Monica.

Los Angelenos may be the most auto-obsessed
people on the planet (see Carmaggedon), but most
of the time we turn a blind eye toward the people
who actually clean our cars -- and their routinely terrible working conditions.

The 10,000 car wash workers, or carwasheros,
working at more than five hundred car washes in
Los Angeles are routinely paid less than minimum
wage working in substandard conditions.

But last month, we helped win a labor rights
victory: about 30 car wash workers announced a
union contract with Bonus Car Wash in Santa
Monica. With this agreement, Bonus workers gained
a wage increase, health and safety protections,
and grievance and arbitration procedures to
resolve workplace problems. The contract also
established rights that protect workers from
being unfairly punished or dismissed.

The ACLU of Southern California has supported the
CLEAN Carwash campaign's efforts since its
inception in 2008. We've helped organize the car
wash workers, aided the contract negotiation
process, and rallied our full membership for support.

This Thanksgiving, we're grateful that Los
Angeles is home to the only unionized car wash in
the country. By next Thanksgiving, we hope to celebrate many more.

"Thanks For What?" -- On this Thanksgiving we have been cheated of the bounty of the harvest as one in three Americans descends into poverty.

"How Students Landed on the Front Lines of Class War" -- University students, who face tuition hikes and state cuts to public education, find themselves victimized by the same neoliberal agenda that has created the current economic crisis, and which profoundly endangers democratic values.
