Colombian union leaders receive death threats from paramilitariesMonday, 23 April 2012 17:06 Christan LeonardTwo Colombian union leaders received death threats from the Aguilas Negras paramilitary group, the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA) reported Monday.According to WOLA, the President and Vice-President of SINTRAEMCALI, a union in the western Colombian department of Valle de Cauca, received a letter Saturday inviting the two leaders to their own funeral.The letter reads:"Special message for the trade unionists of SINTRAEMCALI, especially the President and Vice-President of that f**king organization that is commanded by that pair of snitches, Jorge Ivan Velez and Albert Quintero. Those two motherf*ckers don’t know who they are messing with.I’m sending you this message because I think it is the last one that you will receive because we are going to shoot you for denouncing our bosses. We’re sending you two bullets so that you can look and see which bullet will silence you for being f*gs. Each bullet has one of your names on it. Don’t think that your two bodyguards will be able to save you. They will have to watch over you in the cemetery. We’ve also noticed that you have been visiting the Attorney General’s Office often, but that won’t last long."-Aguilas Negras (Translation from WOLA)In addition to the two bullets mentioned in the letter, the package also contained two roses and a prayer book with a message in it saying the two leaders would die very soon.Mr. Velez told WOLA that he was threatened “for raising the profile of the case of SINTRAEMCALI internationally and domestically.”The message came only a week after U.S. President Barak Obama announced at the Summit of the Americas that the U.S.-Colombia Free Trade Agreement would come into effect May 15th despite strong opposition from labor groups.WOLA called on both the U.S. and Colombian governments to address the threat and to meet the conditions of the U.S.-Colombia Labor Action Plan."In order to effectively provide protection for labor rights defenders and show that violence and intimidation against this group will not be tolerated or condoned, the U.S. and Colombian governments must take immediate and decisive action to investigate this threat and fully prosecute the material and intellectual authors of the crime as mandated by the U.S.-Colombia Labor Action Plan," said WOLA on their website.At the Summit of the Americas, Obama claimed the Colombian government had met the conditions of the Labor Action Plan although many groups deny that substantive efforts have been made to protect workers' right to organize and prosecute crimes against unionists.Human Rights Watch released a study in October which found that "virtually no progress" has been made in the past four and a half years in getting convictions for these crimes.Colombia is the most dangerous country in South America for unionists. According to government figures, 30 trade unionists were murdered in Colombia in 2011 although Colombian unionists assert the actual number is 51.The finalization of the FTA agreement despite ongoing threats to labor rights organizers has caused Colombian labor activists to question U.S. commitment to human rights.

Brooklyn Grocery Store Workers Push for Back Wages, Arrange Boycott As we reported in February, the workers at Golden Farm supermarket in Brooklyn are owed thousands in back pay thanks to years they spent working for less than minimum wage and without legally-mandated overtime benefits. The workers filed a lawsuit in June of 2011, and since then they've been paid proper wages, but are still waiting for the store's owner to hand over the back wages. And since they filed for a union election, the workers have been forced to sit through captive-audience meetings with an anti-union consultant (who no doubt makes much more than the minimum-wage employees). Runaway CEO pay isn’t just bad for our economy, it’s bad for the morale of working families, too. Without the painter, office assistant, welder, electrician and hundreds of millions of workers who work every day to support their families and keep our economy going, our society could not work.

2-D visual art with subject of labor or work, no larger than 40" x 40", all media,  framed or unframed, ready for hanging, for visual art exhibition at the Great Labor Arts Exchange, June 23-25, 2012. 
Each artist is responsible for shipping (or delivery to and from site on June 21)  with pickup morning of June 26.  Artwork not for sale. Please submit J-Peg images, resolution 300 dpi by May 18, 2012.  

Notification of acceptance will be by May 25. All work submitted may be considered for powerpoint presentation at Great Labor Arts Exchange.  

Also, presentations by artists at workshops will be considered.

On 19th anniversary of Cesar Chavez’ death, fight to strike down SB 1070Today is the 19th Anniversary of Cesar Chavez' passing. It also marks the two-year anniversary from when Arizona's Governor Jan Brewer signed SB1070. In two days the U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments challenging the constitutionality of Arizona's discriminatory SB1070 law that targets all Latinos.Cesar Chavez was short with dark Indian features, black hair, brown eyes and a soft Spanish accent. He dressed very much like the farm workers to whom he dedicated his life. Would Cesar Chavez have been suspect under SB 1070 in the state of his birth? Unfortunately the answer, for Cesar and so many Latinos, is yes.To call attention to the issue, the UFW Foundation, the Radio Campesina radio network, and Promise Arizona will hold a vigil tonight at AZ's capitol in Phoenix.
