Have a heart:
Help farm workers get
methyl iodide bannedOn Tuesday, February 14th, Valentine's Day, the Monterey County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing to vote on whether or not to draft a resolution calling on the state to ban methyl iodide in California's agricultural fields.
Dozens of farm workers will be on hand to plead with their elected officials to ban this dangerous pesticide.
Strawberry worker Miriam Garcia, is planning on being there. She has a 6 year old son who suffered birth defects and is now permanently disabled. She believes she was exposed to pesticides during her pregnancy while working in strawberry fields and she blames her son's birth defects on the chemicals. I oppose [methyl iodide] because I work in the fields. I’m opposed to it because it causes cancer. When people are pregnant their kids can come out with defects."
If not, you can still make a difference on this issue, by signing the petition the workers and other environmental groups have put together demanding a permanent ban on methyl iodide.
The time is ripe for change. Just last week, Governor Brown appointed Brian Leahy as the new Director of California’s Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR). This puts California in a position to reverse the Schwarzenegger administration's decision to permit the use of methyl iodide. More than 85% of the country’s strawberries are grown in California, so actions here will have national implications.
Methyl iodide is a known carcinogen that could cause spontaneous miscarriages and contaminate groundwater. Injecting it as a gas into the soil presents unacceptable risks to farm workers, nearby rural communities, pregnant women and children. This toxic chemical is clearly dangerous, has no safe place in agriculture and should be banned.
SIGN THE PETITION TODAY! And if possible, please add a paragraph personalizing your comment.
