Dear SEIU-UHW Member,We know that Prime Healthcare, a system of 14 hospitals in California, picks on employees—and now we know they pick on patients too. The LA Times just revealed that Prime hospital directors didn’t like what a patient said about their hospital so they brought her private medical records to the local newspaper.Yes, you read that correctly. If you violated HIPAA what would happen? No one messes with HIPAA . . . except Prime Healthcare.Read the LA Times column here. There’s something quick you can do to blow the whistle on Prime: please contact Linda Whitney, executive director of the Medical Board of California, at (916) 263-2389 or lwhitney at mbc.ca.gov. Tell her to investigate the HIPAA violations and potential fraud committed by Prime Healthcare. We want to improve the quality of healthcare in California, right? We’re going to raise a flag when a healthcare corporation violates the law, invades people’s privacy and mistreats workers, right? To: LA-LABOR at NEWLISTS.SSCNET.UCLA.EDUWorking for Nothing: The Latest Fast Growth Sector? Presented by:Andrew RossNew York University Thursday, January 12, 201212:30 - 2:00 pmBunche Hall 11377 (11th Floor) Corporate profits have never been higher, at a time when the real unemploymenthas soared. Have bosses learned how to get by without workers? Not really, but the evidence suggests a growing reliance on new kinds of free labor to boostthe balance sheet of companies that are canny enough to harvest it. Free, or token-wage,labor is increasingly available through a variety of channels: crowdsourcing, data-mining,prosumerism, or other sophisticated digital techniques for extracting rentsfrom user/participants; expanded prison labor programs; the explosion of unpaidnear-obligatory internships in every white-collar sector; and the whole gamutof contestant volunteering that has transformed so much of our commerce in cultureinto an amateur talent show, with jackpot stakes for a few winners and hard-luckschwag for everyone else. About the Speaker: Andrew Ross is a Professor of Social and Cultural Analysis at NYU. A contributorto the Nation, the Village Voice, and Artforum, he is the author of many books, including Nice Work if You Can Get It: Life and Labor in Precarious Times, FastBoat to China--Lessons from Shanghai, Low Pay, High Profile: The Global Pushfor Fair Labor, No-Collar: The Humane Workplace and its Hidden Costs, and The CelebrationChronicles: Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Property Value in Disney's New Town.He has also edited several collections, including No Sweat: Fashion, Free Trade, and the Rights of Garment Workers, and The University Against Itself: The NYU Strikeand the Future of the Academic Workplace. Matt Damon and Mother Reject Union's Award Over Teach for America ControversyAnna M. Phillips, The New York Times News Service: "In the opinion piece that Dr. Carlsson-Paige referred to, Dennis Van Roekel, president of the N.E.A., and Wendy Kopp, founder of T.F.A., urged the importance of evaluating and improving teacher training programs across the country. Yet in her e-mail to Mr. Van Roekel, Dr. Carlsson-Paige said she finds this message somewhat disingenuous on the part of T.F.A." Read the Article

Unemployment Falls to 8.5 Percent, but Job Growth Remains WeakDean Baker, Center for Economic and Policy Research: "The pattern of weak job growth in the establishment survey suggests that the drop in unemployment reported in recent months is a fluke. Obama Makes Recess Appointments to NLRB. Is It Enough for AFL-CIO Endorsement?Mike Elk, In These Times: "President Obama's rapid fix to the NLRB's problem stands in stark contrast to the beginning of his term in January 2009, when the board was also inoperable. The speed in making the appointments may be a move by the White House to gain the support of the AFL-CIO, which has yet to endorse Obama, unlike other major unions like AFSCME, NEA, UFCW and SEIU." Indiana workers continue to make their voices heard as the Republican-controlled state legislature attempts to ram through a “right to work” for less bill. The NFL Players Association (NFLPA) today urged the Indiana state legislature to reject a so-called right to work bill. “As Indianapolis proudly prepares to host the Super Bowl,” says the union, “it should be a time to shine in the national spotlight and highlight the hardworking families that make Indiana run instead of launching political attacks on their basic rights.”
