Justice for Patients & Caregivers!
Dear Friends of Raul,
On April 6th at 11 a.m., in the tradition of the Disability Rights Movement, patients, caregivers and human rights advocates will gather to demonstrate and Occupy the Medi-Cal office at 690 Oxford Street, Chula Vista. This fight is being lead by Raul Carranza, a 22 year old San Diegan living with Muscular Dystrophy. Because muscular dystrophy prevents Raul’s muscles from making any energy it has caused his muscles to atrophy over time and he has progressively lost the ability to walk, move his arms, eat or breathe on his own. Because of this, he requires around the clock nursing care.
Currently, Raul is in the biggest fight of his life, the termination of his health benefits appointed by the state. According to every document we have he should qualify for acute care. The law states that any person needing this level of round the clock care be given acute care benefits. In fact, a judge qualified him as such only to have Medi-Cal overturn the decision and deny him the care he needs. Right now, there is too much red tape. Meanwhile, Raul and thousands like him suffer and wait. Well, we cannot wait any longer and we need your help. On Friday, April 6th, help Raul and others like him by raising awareness about their struggle to live independent and fulfilled lives.
We will demonstrate against the life threatening cuts to Medi-Cal, which have led the state to deny cases like Raul's in response to budget pressures. Because of this, patients like Raul will be forced out of their homes and into nursing homes where their quality of life is severely diminished. This is no place for a 22-year-old or any other disabled patient who strives for an independent life or chooses to live at home with the support of loved ones. Occupy Medi-Cal will be demanding full restoration to Raul Carranza’s nursing hours as well as a call to end the cuts to other disabled and elderly patients.
We appreciate all your support in this vital campaign! You can help us spread the word about Occupy Medi-Cal by sharing this email and Raul's petition with your friends and collegues. In Solidarity!
