In light of the EFA meeting today and regarding the demise of the
former
TAG agreement at State, here is an email from SDSU Pres.
Stephen Weber
explaining the new "deferred tag agreement" and maintaining
the school's
'commitment to diversity.'

I have my doubts.

It would be
worthwhile to investigate these numbers and get more info
in advance of the
April 8 town hall forum with him. For instance, our
companeras/os
from SDSU that came to the City TAG meeting had a lot of
great info and
could probably provide an insightful and informed response to
this.

Justin

----- Original Message -----
From: "SDSU
President Stephen L. Weber"

> This fall, San Diego State
expects to enroll the most accomplished
> freshmen class in the
>
university's history. SDSU recently finalized its admissions for fall
> 2010. In addition
> to being the best prepared, the new
class will be the second most diverse
> since SDSU began
> managing
its enrollment and will have the third-highest percentage of
> local-area
students
> (also since 1999).
>
> SDSU has begun notifying
undergraduate applicants about their status. An
> estimated
15,693
> students will receive letters congratulating them on being
admitted to
> SDSU for fall 2010.
> Freshman applicants can access
SDSU WebPortal today to find out if they
> have been accepted.
>
Undergraduate transfer students will receive notification of their
>
acceptance via SDSU
> WebPortal in the next two weeks.
>
>
SDSU received a record 61,800 undergraduate applications for 6,158 total
> undergraduate
> enrollment slots for fall 2010. Incoming
freshmen bring with them an
> average high school
> GPA of 3.78 and
an average SAT score of 1148.
>
> SDSU expects to enroll 3,534
freshmen and 2,624 undergraduate transfer
> students this fall.
>
Approximately 52 percent of SDSU's new freshmen will be from diverse
>
ethnic and racial
> backgrounds -- well above our 11-year average (dating
to when SDSU began
> using supplemental
> admissions
criteria). Diversity continues to be one of SDSU's core values
>
and we remain
> committed to being one of the top universities in the
country for the
> number of degrees
> awarded to diverse
students. Most recently, we expanded our Educational
>
Opportunity
> Program (EOP) and created a Diversity Yield Task
Force.
>
> Similarly, we anticipate 42 percent of the freshmen are
expected to be
> from SDSU's local
> service area (our 11-year
historical average is 37 percent). In addition,
> 90 percent
of
> our new transfer students will be from SDSU's local service
area. In
> total, well more than
> half of incoming
undergraduate students will be local.
>
> Given historic state
budget cuts, we are providing opportunities to those
> students with
the
> best preparation for academic success at the university level.
It is a
> tragedy that SDSU
> will have to turn away more than
24,260 CSU-eligible students from both
> inside and outside
> our
local service area.
>
> However, we are pleased that in spite of
these cuts, we will maintain our
> commitment to the
> region and
better our 11-year average for the percentage of local-area
>
students.
> Consistent with this pledge, local freshman applicants were
given on
> average 381 extra
> eligibility index points to give
them a preference in the admissions
> process (established
> by the
California Postsecondary Education Commission, the CSU eligibility
>
index is a
> combination of a student's SAT/ACT score and their grade
point average on
> CSU required
> coursework).
>
> All
CSU-eligible freshmen and transfer applicants from the local service
>
area who were
> denied admission for fall 2010 can request to be added to
the waiting list
> through the SDSU
> WebPortal. Once admitted
students submit their intent to enroll, which is
> due on May 1,
we
> will be able to determine the number of spaces still
available.
>
> Local CSU-eligible freshmen applicants who were
denied will also qualify
> for a new "special
> transfer admission
guarantee." If these applicants enroll in a local
> community
college
> this fall, complete all of their required coursework within
three years
> (or by fall 2013)
> and meet the current requirements
of their desired major, they will be
> guaranteed admission
> to
SDSU based on the 2010 general catalog. Meaning, should requirements
> for entry into a
> certain major change over the next three
years, these applicants will only
> need to meet the
> requirements
for the current year.
>
> I encourage you to learn more about our
fall 2010 admissions by visiting:
>
> <A
