<P style="MARGIN-BOTTOM: 0in">San Juan, Puerto Rico - La huelga universitaria representa la voluntad de miles de estudiantes de estudiantes de defender la universidad pública de los recortes presupuestarios y las amenazas de privatización promovidas por el gobierno de los ricos encabezado por Luis Fortuño. El estudiantado ha levantado su valiente voz y está exigiendo entre otras, las siguientes demandas:</P>

<P style="MARGIN-BOTTOM: 0in">Derogar la Certificación 98 de la Junta de Síndicos, que elimina las exenciones de matrícula y afecta a miles de estudiantes.</P></LI>
<LI>
<P style="MARGIN-BOTTOM: 0in">Detener los recortes presupuestarios anunciados. Que se abran los libros y se discutan propuestas que no afecten los servicios educativos.</P></LI>
<LI>
<P style="MARGIN-BOTTOM: 0in">Eliminar el alza de matrícula en los cursos de verano. Asegurar una oferta académica completa y accesible a todo al estudiantado.</P></LI></OL>

<P style="MARGIN-BOTTOM: 0in">Estas sencillas demandas pueden ser atendidas inmediantamente por la Junta de Síndicos para que las tareas académicas regresen a la normalidad cuanto antes. La administración universitaria y el gobernador tienen en sus manos la solución de la crisis universitaria: la negociación es el camino correcto.</P>

<P style="MARGIN-BOTTOM: 0in">Desgraciadamente, en su Mensaje a la Legislatura, el gobernador Fortuño lanzó una cruda amenaza al estudiantado en huelga; apoyó la intransigencia administrativa y su intención de derrotar la huelga por medio de la fuerza y la intimidación. Le declaró la guerra al estudiantado en lucha sin importarle que su actitud pueda provocar un baño de sangre en el recinto de Río Piedras.</P>

<P style="MARGIN-BOTTOM: 0in" align=justify>San Juan, Puerto Rico - Thousands of students have decided to strike in order to protect the University of Puerto Rico against budget cuts and threats of privatization proposed by the government of the wealthy, headed by Governor Luis Fortuño. Students have raised their brave voice is to make the following demands:</P>
<P style="MARGIN-BOTTOM: 0in" align=justify><BR></P>
<P style="MARGIN-BOTTOM: 0in" align=justify>1.Repeal Certification 98 of the UPR Board of Trustees, which eliminates tuition exemptions, affecting thousands of students.</P>
<P style="MARGIN-BOTTOM: 0in" align=justify>2.Stop budget cuts immediately. The administration must open its financial records to public scrutiny and begin an informed dialogue about new ideas that will not affect student services.</P>
<P style="MARGIN-BOTTOM: 0in" align=justify>3.Stop summer term tuition hikes, and provide a diverse course offering available to all students.</P>
<P style="MARGIN-BOTTOM: 0in" align=justify><BR></P>
<P style="MARGIN-BOTTOM: 0in" align=justify>These simple demands can be easily addressed by the Board of Trustees so that classes can resume immediately. The administration and the governor have the solution to this crisis in their hands: negotiation is the right path.</P>

<P style="MARGIN-BOTTOM: 0in" align=justify>Unfortunately, Governor Luis Fortuño, during his recent Budget Report to the Legislature, threatened to defeat striking students by sending in the notorious Police Riot Squad. He supported the administration's intransigent stance against negotiation. He has declared war on the students without regard for the fact that he may well be opening the door to a bloodbath in the Río Piedras campus.</P>

<P style="MARGIN-BOTTOM: 0in" align=justify>The Unión de Juventudes Socialistas (UJS), youth branch of the Movimiento Socialista de Trabajadores (MST) is calling on the workers and students of the world to support the striking students in the University of Puerto Rico. Above all, we need economic contributions as well as the broadest possible worldwide dissemination of our message, to make this struggle a success.</P>
