<P>San Diego State University's president announced Tuesday that he would retire
at the end of the academic year.</P>
<P>Stephen L. Weber, 67, made the announcement in <A href="http://newscenter.sdsu.edu/transition/">a video</A> posted on the
university's website.</P>
<P>"This will be my last year as your president," he said. "Over the past 14
years, we have accomplished truly amazing things together; and you –- the people
of San Diego State -– are the reason the future of this university is brighter
than ever."</P>
<P>Weber, the university's seventh president, has been at the helm since 1996.
His retirement, planned for three years, will be effective July 5, 2011.</P>
<P>During his tenure, Weber is credited with overseeing a sharp rise in private
donations, an increase in graduation rates and expanded PhD programs in fields
like evolutionary biology, geophysics and education. In recent years, however,
the campus has been forced to reduce enrollment to save
money.</P></DIV></DIV></DIV>
