The spot asks,<br>"What kind of businessman is Mitt Romney," then tells<br>how Romney made huge profits from the sale of Damon<br>Corporation during his tenure at Bain, his private<br>equity company. Romney served as director of the medical<br>testing firm, which was heavily fined for defrauding<br>Medicare, described by the federal prosecutor as an<br>instance of "corporate greed run amok."<br><br>The ad ends by morphing Romney into Republican Gov. Rick<br>Scott, who ran a hospital chain, Columbia HCA, convicted<br>of massive Medicare fraud, and is now quite unpopular<br>(even though he won his office despite his defrauding a<br>popular government program).<br><br><br><br>SEIU (Service Employees) also is running<br>Spanish-language radio ads aimed at Romney in Tampa and<br>Orlando, Florida (jointly financed with a pro-Obama<br>Super-PAC, Priorities USA Action). "The two faces of<br>Mitt" ad portrays Romney as appealing to Latinos for<br>support in Spanish ads but in speeches and ads in<br>English, Romney opposes the Dream Act, which would allow<br>undocumented immigrant children who finish college or<br>serve in the military to become citizens, and supports<br>the anti-immigrant legislation passed in Alabama and<br>Arizona. <br><br>While Cubans, who can become citizens simply by landing<br>on U.S. soil, are not greatly moved by immigration<br>issues, a growing fraction of Latinos in Florida are<br>from Mexico and other Latin American countries and are<br>very concerned about immigration reform. And their votes<br>could help swing a state like Florida in the fall.<br><br>Today and before Thursday's debate, protesters from the<br>Transport Workers Union will greet Mitt Romney and<br>object to the hiring of Bain & Company--from which Romney<br>still draws much of his $20 million a year income--for<br>the sole purpose of eliminating workers' jobs at<br>American Eagle, a subsidiary of American Airlines'<br>holding company. American declared bankruptcy last Nov.<br>29, and Bain is one of many advisors the company wants<br>to use. <br><br>TWU filed objections in court last week to retention of<br>Bain as a waste of huge amounts of money in pursuit of a<br>questionable strategy. Calling Romney a "job cremator"<br>rather than a job creator, TWU president Jim Little<br>said, "It's outrageous that someone running for<br>president as a 'job creator' is going to enrich himself<br>by cutting pensions, cutting wages and destroying<br>American jobs. Like so many on Wall Street, Mitt Romney<br>earns his money by destroying the jobs of airline<br>employees. We're going to do our best to make sure<br>voters in Florida and elsewhere know exactly where Mitt<br>gets his money." So far the union has no plans to run<br>ads, however.<br><br>The Indiana AFL-CIO, far from the early Republican<br>primaries but in the thick of a fight with Gov. Mitch<br>Daniels and Republican legislators over a<br>"right-to-work" law that reflects the party's anti-labor<br>politics for 2012, took advantage of Daniels' role as<br>the Republican respondent to Obama's state of the union<br>speech last night. It ran ads on cable news and<br>throughout the state showing Daniels promising just a<br>few years ago that he opposed a right-to-work law for<br>Indiana. Today (Wednesday) the Indiana House passed the<br>right-to-work legislation; Gov. Daniels will soon sign<br>it, making Indiana the first state in 10 years to become<br>a right-to-work state.<br><br>TV ad campaigns are costly, and unions can hardly hope<br>to spend a tiny fraction of what antagonistic, primarily<br>Republican, candidates will devote to TV, let alone what<br>the right-wing Super-PACS can spend.<br><br>But strategically placed, well-done, and politically<br>incisive ads can make a big difference, even with a<br>relatively small buy. And early efforts to define<br>opponents can stick. (By contrast, it's hard to see that<br>the fuzzy, if important, message in a trial run of<br>national AFL-CIO ads stating that work brings people<br>together will help labor unions much.) The president also announced the creation of a new mortgage crisis unit to be co-chaired by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. <br><b style="font-weight: bold; "><br>The investigation President Obama launches is a major deal.</b> As Mark Ayers of the AFL-CIO Building and Construction Trades Department said, this new investigative team will “hold accountable those who recklessly caused our economic free fall.”<i><br></i></p><p style="margin-bottom: 1.35em; font-family: Verdana; "><b style="font-weight: bold; ">We demanded a strong stand on behalf of working families—and the president heard us. We’ll keep raising our voices.</b> Next time I meet with him, I’m going to deliver each and every note sent by AFL-CIO activists thanking him for listening. But President Obama’s speech did more.<br><br><span style="font-weight: bold; ">Our </span><b style="font-weight: bold; ">president made it clear that the era of the 1% getting richer by looting the economy is over.</b> He outlined a vision of an America that works for everyone, addressed devastating income inequality, called for investment in jobs and infrastructure, proposed tax rules that aren’t skewed to favor the 1%—and more.<br><b style="font-weight: bold; "><br>President Obama made it clear that children and our future must be priorities.</b> As Randi Weingarten of the AFT said last night:</p><p style="margin-bottom: 1.35em; margin-left: 40px; font-family: Verdana; "><i>Obama also made clear tonight what America’s teachers have long understood: <b style="font-weight: bold; ">We can’t test our way to a middle class; we must educate our way to a middle class</b>....Respecting public school teachers and providing them with the tools and resources they need to help our children learn and grow are essential to building a strong public education system, competing in a global economy and restoring economic opportunity for all.</i></p><p style="margin-bottom: 1.35em; font-family: Verdana; "><b style="font-weight: bold; ">And Obama demanded investment in good, high-paying jobs—and said he would work to bring manufacturing back to America.</b> That’s just what America’s working families need—and just what the members of the United Steelworkers need, said Leo Gerard, president of the United Steelworkers:</p><p style="margin-bottom: 1.35em; margin-left: 40px; font-family: Verdana; "><i>Strengthening American manufacturing by looking to build good jobs, green jobs and sustainable jobs with American energy, skills and values is a program for us....</i><b style="font-weight: bold; "><i>The president’s commitment to discourage job outsourcing and promote insourcing is a ticket to a better economy.</i></b></p><p style="margin-bottom: 1.35em; font-family: Verdana; ">As President Gerald W. It may be difficult to hear for some of my Republican friends. But this needs to be said plainly, because this is worse than I’ve ever seen: The national Republican Party—as an institution—is openly and brazenly waging war on workers.<br><br>Indiana’s rabidly anti-worker governor, Mitch Daniels, was chosen by GOP leaders to deliver the party’s official response to Obama’s State of the Union address last night. He was chosen at the exact moment that he’s pushing an attack on workers’ rights in Indiana—rights <b style="font-weight: bold; ">more severe</b> than the one rammed through by Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin. <br><br><b style="font-weight: bold; ">This is no coincidence.</b> In today’s Republican Party, attacks like these are celebrated.<br><b style="font-weight: bold; "><br>The stark contrast between the record and rhetoric of President Obama last night and that of Gov. Daniels—who is pushing to put an end to workers’ rights in Indiana—couldn’t be more profound. </b><br><br>At this defining moment, working people need to demand that leaders like President Obama continue to draw a clear, unambiguous contrast with the 1% politicians. We crave it and dream up novel ways to combine it with other ingredients to produce delectable foods; and we worry that we eat too much of it and that it is making us unhealthy or fat. But how often do Americans think about where sugar actually comes from or the people who produce it? But globally, most of the story of sugar, past and present, centers around sugarcane, not beets, and as biofuels become more common, it is sugarcane that is cultivated for ethanol. At one point, the van I was riding in got stuck in a traffic jam of enormous trucks, each full of sugarcane, delivering their loads to a refinery. The area around the refinery smelled terrible, and the locals told us the smell came from oxidizing ponds that hold the refinery's wastewater. When the refineries are washed out, typically once a year, the </span><b style="line-height: 20px; font-weight: bold; color: rgb(42, 42, 42); font-family: Times; font-size: 16px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">wastewater</b><span style="color: rgb(42, 42, 42); font-family: Times; font-size: 16px; line-height: 20px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); "> is dumped into local waterways,</span><b style="line-height: 20px; font-weight: bold; color: rgb(42, 42, 42); font-family: Times; font-size: 16px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">resulting in fish kills</b><span style="color: rgb(42, 42, 42); font-family: Times; font-size: 16px; line-height: 20px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">. This spurred me to learn more about how sugar is made, both in the U.S. and around the world, and how it impacts the land and the people who produce it. Sadly, the story of </span><b style="line-height: 20px; font-weight: bold; color: rgb(42, 42, 42); font-family: Times; font-size: 16px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">sugar is also the story of the African slave trade</b><span style="color: rgb(42, 42, 42); font-family: Times; font-size: 16px; line-height: 20px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">. Mintz chronicles in his book </span><em style="line-height: 20px; color: rgb(42, 42, 42); font-family: Times; font-size: 16px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">Sweetness and Power: The Place of Sugar in Modern History</em><span style="color: rgb(42, 42, 42); font-family: Times; font-size: 16px; line-height: 20px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">, when cane sugar first appeared in England in the 12th century, only royalty could afford it, and even then, only in small quantities. This is hardly surprising, considering the journey sugar made to reach England.</span><br style="line-height: 20px; color: rgb(42, 42, 42); font-family: Times; font-size: 16px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); "><span style="color: rgb(42, 42, 42); font-family: Times; font-size: 16px; line-height: 20px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">Sugarcane, a fast-growing tropical grass that reaches 12 to 15 feet high at maturity, was domesticated around 8000 B.C.E. in New Guinea and was carried to India, the Philippines, and perhaps Indonesia some 2,000 years later. By 500 C.E., Indians were making sugar, a process that involves pressing the two-inch-thick cane to extract a dark green juice, rich with nutrients as well as sucrose, then boiling it down to remove liquid and crystalize the sugar. Various processes can be used to refine the sugar so that it is anywhere from a brown color to the chemically pure, white crystal we know today. Of course, until relatively recently, sugar refiners were never able to achieve a mass-produced commodity product so pure that it was completely white.</span><br style="line-height: 20px; color: rgb(42, 42, 42); font-family: Times; font-size: 16px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); "><span style="color: rgb(42, 42, 42); font-family: Times; font-size: 16px; line-height: 20px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">Europeans have the Arabs to thank for their introduction to sugar. Although the Spanish had nothing nice to say about the Moorish occupation of their land, it was the Arabs who introduced sugar production to the European mainland in the seventh and eighth centuries. The predicament we face isn't simply<br>that there are too few jobs; it's also that an<br>increasing number of workers don't have the kind of job<br>that can pay the bills.<br><br>While productivity has grown by more than 80% over the<br>last 30 years, wages have effectively been flat for 80%<br>of Americans. So, although we're making stuff faster<br>and more efficiently, the benefits of that hard work<br>have not trickled into the pockets of the people who do<br>it.<br><br>Let's turn first to the intensifying debate over Mitt<br>Romney's role as a private equity manager. It's of<br>course ludicrous that Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry --<br>two veteran advocates of a vehemently anti-union,<br>free-market agenda that laid the foundation for the<br>newly coined "vulture capitalism" -- condemned those<br>principles while campaigning in New Hampshire and South<br>Carolina.<br><br>But equally absurd is Romney's defense that, at the end<br>of the day, his company, Bain Capital, created more<br>jobs than it destroyed. Even if he's telling the truth<br>by some measures, the fact is that private equity<br>buyouts often enrich those who arrange them by sharp<br>cost-cutting, including dismantling pay and benefits<br>for most of the workers who remain or new hires who<br>join the more "efficient" enterprise. It's simple math:<br>To service the huge debt taken on in virtually every<br>buyout, workers take cuts. And the new jobs aren't<br>necessarily a path to the American dream.<br><br>Take Staples, which Romney trumpets as one of his<br>successes. The company certainly pays some of its<br>employees well: Staples Chairman and Chief Executive<br>Ronald L. Sargent received a total pay package of more<br>than $15 million in 2010. But jobs in retail -- one of<br>the fastest-growing job sectors in recent decades --<br>tend to pay poorly, and Staples jobs don't seem to be<br>an exception to that rule.<br><br>Although the company doesn't publish its wage scale,<br>the website glassdoor.com, which allows workers to post<br>their salaries anonymously to try to give a picture of<br>wages at a company, suggests that the average Staples<br>sales associate or EasyTech associate makes less than<br>$9 an hour. An employee working a 40-hour week, 52<br>weeks a year at that rate would make significantly less<br>than the 2010 federal poverty level threshold for a<br>family of four of $22,314. So, although Romney likes to<br>claim credit for creating jobs, he needs to be asked<br>how many of those jobs were ones that allowed employees<br>to make ends meet.<br><br>And even that question doesn't get at another issue:<br>the number of jobs that were lost as the growth of<br>Staples and similar companies drove mom-and-pop<br>stationery shops and office supply stores across the<br>country out of business.<br><br>Republicans, though, aren't alone in muddying the<br>waters. A few days ago, the president held a political<br>photo op, praising several companies for bringing back<br>jobs from overseas: so-called in-sourcing.
