Hello good people!
This is Salem. Yesterday at the workshops/events meeting, we talked
about putting together an alternative black history month event where
folks could speak about and commemorate people other than the usual
Dr. King and Malcom X (though both were very awesome in their own
ways). I decided to be the leading person for this particular event
and for getting the info out there. So far I've got a few ideas for
the event, including a 14 minute long documentary I found on youtube
about the 1979 Greensboro Massacre in North Carolina. The massacre was
in response to the Communist Workers Party or Workers Viewpoint
Organization's attempt to organize mostly black industrial workers who
lived in the area. The KKK responded violently and shot and killed 5
people. Anyway, along with the documentary, I also thought it
appropriate to read a few quotes and excerpt by both Audre Lorde and
Patricia Hill Collins who are AWESOME. If anyone is interested in
doing anything for the event please let me know because the help would
be great. There were talks about gathering information on Jackson Ward
and it's rich history. I thought about taking on the challenge and
will still attempt but the help would be awesome. Anything from
youtube clips, poetry readings, etc are also welcomed. There are many
people aside from the usual Dr. King and Malcom X who have had a great
influence on civil rights and black power, so lets bring them to
light! Thanks and have a tasty tuesday!
