Brickers,
Hey y'all. Here's the meeting notes from Monday, Aug 30th.
- NEWSLETTER
The newsletter will soon have a consistent format for every issue.
Parts will include: header, open hours, address, short history of the
Brick, photo on the cover page, calendar of events, blurb about events
that aren't self-explanatory, list of thematic volunteer
recommendations (the green shelf), book and zine review, article with
radical perspective on a topic in the local or national headlines.
Salem volunteered to bottom-line a literary component of poetry or
essay as well.
Group voted to have a finished newsletter by next meeting, and to add
distribution of the newsletter to the that agenda.
- ON CONFLICT & CONSENSUS
Suggestion that we keep this booklet in a prominent place and
recommend that visitors and volunteers look through it during open
hours if they have not yet. Explains all the basic ideas and
processes of consensus. Eric at the Wingnut currently has it checked
out, but upon return, everyone should read over it.
- EVENT PROPOSALS
September is the 100th anniversary of the Mexican revolution. To
commemorate, film screening of "A Little Bit of So Much Truth" is
proposed for September 15th. (Trailer here:
http://www.cinerebelde.org/a-little-bit-of-so-much-truth-p-68.html)
Jen is bottom-lining.
Maliq of the predominantly anarchist Common Ground collective in New
Orleans, which was taking care of citizens there before FEMA even
*thought* about getting its act together, will be coming through town
at an undetermined date. Probably appearing at William Byrd or
another venue, but we'd like to help promote the event once a date is
set.
Jules Cohen will be in town and willing to perform a poetry reading in
December. Ramey is gathering info for everyone.
Recommended that we screen Fourth World War sometime in the next few
months.
- FILM LIST
Months ago we had proposed starting a film list from which we could
select screenings. Nic has volunteered to start us off with a list of
good stuff, and all volunteers may add to it once it is up and posted.
Nic says the list will be ready by Thursday open hours.
- WORKSHOP
Interest was expressed in getting the sewing/tailoring/knitting
workshop done this coming month. Salem volunteered to speak to his
(new) roommate/friend about basic sewing and tailoring, and Mara
volunteered to teach basic knitting. No date set, but these folks
will work on it.
- TASK LIST
A list will be created and maintained of tasks that need to be
performed / bottom-lined for each general meeting. So far, this
includes calling volunteers to schedule next meeting (task assumed by
Salem & Kontra during open hours this month), brief overview of
consensus, volunteer coordinator to arrange schedule of open hours,
reminder about the volunteer log.
- ZINEFEST
The Brick has a lot of zines that need to be sorted through. This
will be a primary task for the month of September so that the Brick
can be represented at Zine Fest in October. Mara is attending the
zine night at the Wingnut tonight (Wed) to request that those folks
stop by and help during open hours in September.
- SLAVE BURIAL GROUND
Nathan suggested we be looking for ways to support awareness and
action around the slave burial ground, either by hosting our own
event, or by helping with someone else's
- GUN DISCUSSION REVIEW
Overwhelmingly positive feedback about the gun discussion. Suggestion
made that the broad topic allowed for people who wouldn't normally
show, and the respectful discussion made for genuine sharing of ideas.
More discussions desired in the future.
