1. Events
-Eating Disorder Coalition Fundraiser- Matt W. is planning a
fundraiser for the Eating Disorders Coalition. If anyone is interested
in helping him plan this, contact him either through email or phone.
Dating TBA.
-The first movie screening/potluck of our book-based film series is
Persepolis! Friday, July 29th at 7PM. Bring a dish to share! Remember,
the Flying Brick is a sober space, so please no drinking, drugs, or
intoxication.
-Crimethinc book tour- Crimethinc is touring with their new book,
Work. Event will be either August 25th or 30th, TBA. Alison is
bottomlining.
-Kenny would like to organize a free class on Reading Marx's Capital
using this [ http://davidharvey.org/reading-capital/ ] as a resource.
They would like to hold it corresponding with the first week of school
(VCU), and have one class per week. The class will end about the same
time as VCU and honor all the same holidays. Will be promoted as a
free class and folks who miss a class can catch up on their own time.
-Field Trips- Greg & Nathan have been discussing Flying Brick Field
Trips - On Sunday August 28th, meet at the Brick for a trip to
Washington DC to visit the Museum of the American Indian, as well as
the National Museum of Natural History to see the RACE: Are We So
Different?,exhibit, developed by the American Anthropological
Association in collaboration with the Science Museum of Minnesota, It
is the first national exhibition to tell the stories of race from the
biological, cultural, and historical points of view. Combining these
perspectives offers an unprecedented look at race and racism in the
United States.
Folks will need to bring money for food, metro fair, and gas. If you
can't afford this, there is a chance that the Library can sponsor a
few people. Contact theflyingbrick at riseup.net to RSVP (for carpool
info) or to ask about funding. If this field trip goes well, there
could be a trip to Harper's Ferry in the future!
2. Scott's books
When Scott moved away, he left behind about 6 boxes of books to
donate to the Library. Matt, Ramey, and Nathan will be meeting at the
Brick on Sunday July 24th at noon to sort through them. Anybody else
is welcome to join.
3. Zines
The new zine shelving system will begin construction on
Thursday, August 15th during Open Hours. Nathan & Ramey are
bottomlining; anybody else is welcome to help!
4. New Checkout Log
Nathan will be bottomlining a new system for Checkouts. Every
person who visits the Library is asked to sign an accountability form.
These forms will have the person's contact information on them, and
will be used as the checkout log. They will be stored alphabetically,
and the log of the books they check out will be kept on the same
sheet. To be implemented in the next few weeks.
5. Library Cards
Volunteers are encouraged to give out the Flying Brick Library
business cards, particularly to newcomers. It has all of our contact
information on it, and it can be used as a bookmark. You can also
suggest that people write down their book due dates on the back of the
card so they can more easily keep track!
6. Collective Membership
Nathan is interested in finding out if people would like to form
a more cohesive collective, by determining a defined decision making
body of people who are committed to being involved & making real
progress. This does NOT mean that meetings or anything else would be
closed to the public. Agreeing to be a part of the collective would
mean a commitment to 3 things:
1) Frequent communication between members
2) Regular attendance of meetings (say, not missing more than
2 meetings in a row without communicating to the rest of the
group)
3) Commitment to volunteering at Open Hours or events at least
once or twice a month
Nathan will be making INDIVIDUAL contact with people over the next
few weeks, solely to determine the amount of people on the volunteers
list who are interested in seeing this happen. Nothing has been
formally proposed or voted on as of this point.
7) Standard Stuff
Ramey will bottomline August Open Hours volunteers schedule
Megan will send out meeting reminders for next month - Monday
August 1st at 12:30 PM & Thursday August 18th at 6:30 PM
