Meeting Notes from September 22, 2011
Attendance: T, Nathan, Matt, Christie, Kenny, Antony, Mara
Agenda Items: Regular library stuff, Report backs, Periodicals,
Events, Stickers, Collective, Open Hours/ Reaching out
1. Regular Stuff
Mara will be the Volunteer Coordinator
Christie will send out reminders for the October meetings
2. Report Backs
The Troy Davis demonstration and vigil at Monroe Park on September
21st. Kenny, Nathan, and Mara attended. They were glad that it was
organized on such short notice, and that many new people attended who
haven’t been noticeably politically active. They thought that the
reading of Troy Davis’ statement and the 8 minutes of silence were
respectful. It was also quite tense in the wait.
Christie let us know about the TRAP Laws passing 12:1 and what has
been going on to fight them. The good news is that there will be a
lawsuit, but the bad news is that the laws have to be in effect
(January 1, 2012) in order for a lawsuit to happen. The Richmond
Reproductive Freedom Project (RRFP) is working on a better
transportation network for people when these laws are in effect.
Christie wanted to also point out that a part of these laws include
inspectors being able to show up whenever they want, unannounced,
which will also have a lawsuit.
3. Periodicals
Christie suggested a free subscription to Indie Kid magazine, even
though there aren’t a lot of kids that come in, it’s good to have to
broaden our age group. Kenny adds that it is a well written magazine.
Christie will bottom line it.
Ellen asked Nathan to suggest the Anarchist Syndicalist Review which
is $20 a month. We suggested to ask for a discount, but agreed even if
not. Also Bite Back, an ALF (Animal Liberation Front) Journal, not
sure of the cost. We agreed that we may need more literature related
to animal liberation in the library, especially considering the high
vegan/vegetarian population in Richmond.
4. Events
Matt would like to hold a fundraiser show for the Eating Disorders
Coalition, which lobbies for the government to recognize eating
disorders as a mental health problem. Matt is also currently training
for a half marathon to raise $2,000. He would like to talk about
issues during the show and is looking for any speakers, someone to
help gather bands, or just help in general. Christie offered to help.
Possible dates are 10/24, 11/4, or 11/11 (all Fridays) but 11/4 is
most preferred.
Rescheduling Field Trip to DC for Sunday Oct 16th
Possible trip to Harpers Ferry in the fall.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest movie showing was supposed to be on
September 30th but may be rescheduled to October 7th.
5. Stickers
People not feeling the recent design ideas, so we are still waiting
for more ideas and a decision to be made. Kenny will research union
printing companies.
6. Slingshots- it’s that time of the year!
Nathan will bottom line, still ordering 20 big and 20 small. Big ones
are $10 and small ones are $5. Hyping them up early so people will be
ready to buy them!
7. Collective
Positive feedback from everyone interested. Most questions were about
how to make it inclusive, but anyone is still welcome to volunteer,
even if not in the collective.
Reasons to form: making it easier to coordinate (we will know who to
call), having a stronger commitment, forming a relationship with
people who are passionate about the library.
Asked if Sundays or Mondays daytime are good for collective members to
meet? (most likely Monday between 11am-3pm)
8. Open Hours/Outreach
Some people have reported it to be awkward or not feeling welcome, but
Christie and Mara who have volunteered recently say that new people
have been coming and volunteers have been welcoming. Anyone is welcome
to do more flyering and tabling at events. Zine Fest will help, but
will focus more on out reach after collective gets going.
