Flying Brick Meeting Notes 2/29/12

Attendance: Mara, Nathan, Allison, Jordan

Facilitator: Nathan
Notes: Mara

Agenda:
- Defenders/Brick Social Night
- C-ville Anarchist Bookfair
- Zine Organizing
- Vision/Strategize for Collective Restructuring

*Defenders & The Flying Brick Social Night*
 - Phil Wilayto of the Defenders for Freedom Justice & Equality would like
to have a Social Night for The Flying Brick and the Defenders. Phil feels
that many of the Defenders and people associated with the group do not know
much about the Flying Brick or the people that frequent it and organize
with it, but he feels that those that do know about it are curious and
intrigued. They would like to meet more than just a couple of us at random
meetings and marches, so Nathan is going to talk with Phil to find out when
they are available. *Nathan will report back with dates and times, and find
out which work best for Flying Brick folks. This will not be a closed
event, but it won't be heavily promoted, since it is meant to be about
getting to know people who are regularly involved and have
social/organizing ties. *

*Charlottesville Anarchist Bookfair, March 24th, 1pm @ Random Row Books*
- 2nd annual bookfair, with workshops and a VA roundtable discussion.
- *Allison and Nathan will get together tabling materials, anyone else
interested should contact them.* They would ideally like to spend Friday
night, Saturday all day, and most of Sunday there, as there will be great
opportunities to get to know people from throughout VA and possibly
Maryland, DC, and North Carolina.

*Zine Organizing Day, Tuesday March 6th @ 2pm*
- Allison and Mara will starting to re-organize the zines.
- Ellen found filing cabinets in an alley in the neighborhood and the zines
will go in them. Some purging might be necessary.
- If you want to help, get in touch with Mara or Allison, or just come on
the 6th. They most likely will not finish that day, so *if you can't come
but want to help, let them know so that another day can be planned!*

*Visioning/Strategy for the Future of the Flying Brick*

This mostly just a free flowing conversation because of the small number of
people, and by no means should be the last one. Common things that came up
was a need for consistency, commitment, communication, and an overall
strategy for the space. Nathan thinks less time should be spent on
organizing events, because with more promotion of the space and more
relationship building with other groups and communities, more people will
want to use the space to have their own events. This shouldn't discourage
people from organizing an event here that they would really like to see
happen, but no one should feel the need to come up with event ideas. Mara
said she would really like to see more regular classes, to help people
learn in depth about different subjects. Jordan would like to see more
poetry and expression happen. Allison really would like to see more
consistency with open hours and promotion of the Brick as a library and a
community. Everyone agreed that some concrete ideas of where the Brick has
strength and where it has weakness needs to be talked about, and while the
nature of any DIY space usually lends itself to a certain demographic of
people, the Brick can still attempt to be a good ally to other communities
and groups, and hold people accountable they are associated with when there
are problems. A bigger anti-oppression stance and analysis is important,
and it should be regularly talked about at meetings and put into action.
Some clear guidelines for people holding events here would also be very
helpful.
*
Next Meeting*
I had to interpret Mara's notes, as they were shorthand, so I hope I didn't
get anything too spun through my own perspective. I also added things that
I remembered from the meeting. Since very few people respond to the list
usually, and we are trying to figure out who exactly is interested in
putting a lot of time into the Library, we thought we could continue to
have meetings that move around, fitting people's schedules as needed. We've
been using a "doodle poll" to do this, which is SUPER DUPER easy, so if you
would like to get the next one, please email me privately. As always, once
the meeting time is decided on, we will announce it on the list to be sure
everyone knows when it will happen. Thanks to all of your continued support!
