Thursday, March 22nd at 7pm at Richmond’s African Burial Ground

On the night of Feb. 26, 2012, 17-year old Trayvon Martin was shot and
killed while walking to his father's home in Sanford FL by a
“self-appointed” neighborhood watch captain, 29-year old George Zimmerman.
Zimmerman was not arrested because police officers took his word that his
action was self-defense! Zimmerman had called 911 to report a suspicious
black male walking through his gated community and continued to follow
Trayvon in spite of the 911 dispatcher telling him “you do not need to do
that for us” and trying to arrange for the police to meet Zimmerman so the
police could handle it. Zimmerman chased Trayvon who ran, according to a
friend Trayvon was on his phone with at the time, and in the altercation
Zimmerman decided to use his gun. One shot, and Trayvon, COMPLETELY
UNARMED, was dead on the ground. His only “crime“ was walking while black.

We stand in solidarity with the families of Trayvon Martin, Reginald
Latson, Oscar Grant and Sean Bell, and say *we cannot tolerate the racist
practices of racial profiling, the criminalization of Black boys and men,
or the devaluation of Black lives.* Please join us as we remember and
reflect on the lives of these young men and the many others we don't know.
