We decided before we actually begin the reading group, we think we can do more to increase participation and make it more inclusive. So instead, we are going to make this first meeting, (still September 6th at Flying Brick) a continuation of the planning process including everyone who has shown interest thus far. The meeting will be facilitated by Eleanor. Here are a few starter questions to discuss:

1) Introduction. Who are we? What do we care about generally? What is our relationship to these ideas?

2) Goals: What do we want out of this group as individuals? Are there overarching goals we can derive from these answers?

3) Process: What is our general structure and how are we going to make decisions. (by consensus makes sense to me here)

4) Finalize Logistics: Time, place. etc.

Solidarity,

On Mon, Aug 22, 2011 at 11:58 AM, Kenneth Yates <causticcastle@gmail.com> wrote:

Some of us have organized a group reading and discussion of Karl Marx's classic book 'Capital'. We will be meeting WEEKLY beginning:

Tuesday September 6, 2011
5:00pm - 7:00pm
@ The Flying Brick Library
506 S. Pine St. (oregon hill)

We're going to be using David Harvey's teachings as a supplement to our discussions. So in other words, go here after you read each chapter [ http://davidharvey.org/reading-capital/ ] watch him talk about it and then come together as a group and discuss it even further so that we can all get a better understanding of Marx's theory as it applies to everyday contemporary life.

It is reccomended that everyone follow the same translation and the Penguin Classic's translation is said to be the most accurate. Purchase your copy online at this Union bookstore [ http://www.powells.com/biblio/7-9780140445688-2 ].

It would be a good idea to read the first chapter of Marx's Capital before attending this first "class", but we may just watch as a group the first video in his series titled "Introduction" to get us started.
