Hi,
I work for a television company called Betty TV and am currently finding
contributors for a documentary on young people and money - see Press
Release below...
We are really keen to put an anchor film in this series that gives a
totally different perspective - so many young people are growing up
being bombarded by images of celebrity and body perfection and thinking
that they can find fulfilment through their labels or their i-pods - and
we'd appreciate the opportunity to make a film that just says "No. Hold
on a minute. There is another way of looking at money and life and how a
person can define themselves and respect themselves".
We do, however, require these films to be narratives and are looking for
someone whose views on money can be clearly seen through their actions
in life at this point in time.
We thought that one example should be someone who is careful about their
level of consumerism and who is also going to be active in trying to put
across their views on fair trade, at the G8 maybe, although this is by
no means the only narrative we would accept. It's important for us to
provide a platform that offers an alternative arguement, allowing a
different voice to come through. This could be someone who's turned
their back on all things consumer or someone who's politically active
against this money fuelled world...
I would really appreciate any help I can get in finding the right young
person who should be aged between 16-25 for this film. We are keen to
meet people asap, so your thoughts and advice would be hugely
appreciated. It is also important to note that these programmes are for
the educational department of Channel 4 and have no agenda except
allowing it's contributor to have their views heard and explored.
Please do get in touch if you need any more information. Please also
pass my details on to anyone who may be interested in taking part, and
do let them know they can talk to me first with no obligation to take
part.
Thank you for all your help, I'll look forward to hearing from you soon.
Kind Regards

Press Release
April 2005
Betty TV is making a series of documentaries for Channel 4 Education
about young people and their attitude to money. We are looking for
people aged 16-25 to star in the films and get their voice heard.
Why Now? Young people in Britain have never had access to so much
disposable income; their attitude to money is being formed earlier than
ever before. We live in a material world, a world which puts young
people under huge pressure - to wear the right clothes, own the latest
gadgets and stay ahead of the pack. There is the spend now, pay later
set who have credit cards, loans, or generous parents, and seem to live
a lifestyle they can't possibly sustain. Some young people resort to
'inventive' ways of making money to get themselves out of university
debts, perhaps through wheeling and dealing - . Whatever their story, we
want to hear from 16-25 year olds who feel that money affects their life
decisions.
Betty TV wants to find out how young people really feel about money, how
they get it, how they spend or how they save it. We want to address the
consequences of living in an aspirational society.
Betty TV have a commitment to making quality programming for and about
young people. Among Betty TV's previous productions are 'This Teen Life'
(2003, C4) which won an RTS educational award, and 'Rude Britannia'
(2004, C4), a series challenging adult perceptions of teenagers
behaviour, this has been nominated for RTS educational award.
