Sparkfun have good SMD soldering tutorials. They recommend a hot plate as
the best way:

I also noticed a tutorial about making your own solder paste there but
haven't read it.

I also need to solder a tiny QFN package (0.5 mm pitch) so I've ordered a
stencil from OSHStencils (seems no relation to OSHPark?), I'll let you know
how it goes!
