[HacktionLab] Potential meet-up during my visit from Australia

Hi there,

My name is Peter Dreisiger and I'll be visiting London from Perth (Australia) between the 22nd of July to the 2nd of August and I guess I was wondering if HacktionLab had any meetings (or meet-ups) planned during that period, or if it'd otherwise be possible to catch up with a few members. While I currently live in Australia, I am planning to move to the UK in the next year, and this group (as well as the LARC) seems like something I'd like to get involved with.

Here, I've been involved in the refugee rights campaign — by way of on-the-ground organising, as well as developing and deploying field-based tech — but I'm also increasingly moving towards more general and/or strategic technology that can be used across campaigns and types of groups; I've also been trying to establish something of a technology for activists collective here to cover not just in-the-field tech but, say, computer security and evidence gathering tools and practical workshops/drop-in clinics; unfortunately, that's not gotten off the ground yet. (A very rough and out of date list of some of the projects I'm working on [but have not necessarily updated the public documentation yet] can be seen at https://interarma.org/doku.php?id=projects:start.)

I've also been involved with Perth's Hackerspace, the Artifactory, for a few years, and I've been part of the Rad Library (a weekly, mobile activist/anarchist/social-change-themed library in a park) since 2010 but the former, at least, seems to have headed down the path of a 'makerspace' rather than some of the more politically engaged hacker groups in other parts of the world. (I did help to organise Perth's first #CryptoParty but the take up of that project has been a bit slow too.)

Well, I'll leave it there, but it'd be great to hear back from someone, be it just to get to know some people before I move over to the UK, to find out a bit about how your group formed and how well it's worked as a collective, or maybe even to talk about some potential collaborations.

Thanks in advance,

Pete
