thanks for the tip.  Nothing to do with MySQL though, that was all fine.

It was just the fact that I'd used a single global install of MediaWiki
on the server softlinked to from the various sites' home directories.

The update updated Mediawiki, and it took me a while to upgrade the
individual sites and a few issues with deprecated extensions.

Anyway, sorted now, cheers.  Wiki site is back up, BarnCamp I'll still
working on.
